My first trip to Tanzania as a solo traveller was 10 years ago and it took quite a bit of courage to book. Such a faraway country and so very different from where I call home. Yet, the eagerness to see wild animals in their natural habitat and experience the sweeping vistas on a Serengeti safari made me go for it without hesitation.

Travelling solo throughout Tanzania isn’t as dangerous or difficult as one might think and I personally found it one of the safer countries to visit in Africa. It’s pretty accessible and if you are prepared well and plan ahead, you can feel comfortable and confident once you land. My first trip was booked through a travel operator and that first visit gave me enough confidence to pursue all planning for the subsequent trips on my own. 

Solo female travel tips for Tanzania 

One: Book your trip with a trusted tour operator

If you opt for a solo safari Tanzania has a lot of tour operators to choose from. Pick a trusted company that you feel secure with. Look at their reviews and ask as many questions as you can before booking. A good tour operator will make sure you are safe at all times and arrange all transportation, from airport pick-ups to shuttles. I’ve travelled with G Adventures and BornWild. G Adventures offers affordable safaris as well-planned adventures. Even though camping was basic, it felt like a truly authentic experience hosted by friendly guides. BornWild is an adventure company I started after falling in love with Tanzania. Two: Share your itinerary with family or friends 

Share your complete itinerary with a family member or friend to make sure someone always knows where you are and what you are doing. Good practice for any travel. 

Three: Make sure you can use your phone

Make sure your phone is unlocked before you travel in case of emergencies. You can purchase a local SIM on arrival or pre-buy an eSIM so you are set on arrival. 

Four: Don’t step into any unlicensed mini-cabs or taxis 

It is best to organise all transportation before you arrive. If, however, you need a taxi to pick you up from the airport or other transportation make sure you organise it with licensed firms or through hotels to ensure safety and security. Your accommodation staff can help with transportation to and from the airport and are always there to advise on getting to places securely. Hotel staff are also a great resource on which areas are safe and unsafe. Carry their number with you wherever you go in case of emergency. 

Five: Don’t go out after dark

Plan your day to be back at your lodge or camp before the dark sets in. Navigating your way through the dark unlit streets of Tanzania can be very dangerous if you are not accompanied by a group or by a local you know and trust. Tanzania is known for muggings and bag snatching so solo female travellers can be targeted.  

Six: Leave expensive items and jewellery at home. 

Theft is a common occurrence in Tanzania so keep any expensive items like phones, tablets, watches or jewellery out of sight when travelling. 

Seven: Don’t hold eye contact with the opposite sex

Men in Tanzania can often assume holding eye contact with women is a sign of romantic interest. If you prefer not to draw attention to yourself then it’s best to avoid maintaining eye contact with men you don’t know.

Eight: Avoid public transport as an added safety measure 

Using public transport in Tanzania is generally fine. However, public buses are known to be jam-packed at peak times which may leave you waiting a long time at the bus stops thus exposing you to potential threats. Travelling by bus also means you have to walk from the bus stop to your desired location requiring good knowledge of the area and the ability to be discreet if looking up directions. Factoring in unwanted male attention it might be worth skipping public transportation altogether. 

Nine: Dress appropriately 

Covering your shoulders, midriff, legs and arms is very important to respect the culture and avoid unwanted attention. 

Ten: Be aware of the crimes in Tanzania before you travel 

Tanzania is typically only affected by petty crimes such as bag snatching and mugging, however, sometimes crimes can be much worse including sexual assault, robbery, and carjacking. Being aware of these crimes will help you understand the region better. Check alerts for your destination on the official government websites (Canada, USA, UK) and do general research ahead of time. You can also register your travel plans with your local government as a precaution (example).

Aeroplan online retail partners

There are quite a few popular retailers, including Amazon, Apple, Chapters, Under Armour, Rail Europe, and many, many more. All you do is access your shop of choice through Aeroplan, and you will earn points on your entire purchase (double if you use an Aeroplan credit card).

Additionally, they often have special offers that can multiply your points earned, so if you are not in a rush, wait for bonus points to maximize my reward (see the image as an example). 

If you fly for work, even if your employer paid for the flight, you, as the traveller, get the points, so make sure to add that number to your itinerary.

Tip: You can add your reward number to any Air Canada flight up until departure day, so even if you forgot or were not a member at the time of purchase, you can still catch up. If you do happen to forget, you can request missing points on this page.

Tips for using the points

Use them on shorter flights, the ones that cost under 45,000 points. That’s still a lot of destinations, and they have lower taxes (typically under $200) with a lot of direct flight options. Longer flights (such as Europe) use a lot more points, while you can get those flights on sale for much less in cash.

If there is a good seat sale, take that into consideration. For example, flying to Vancouver is generally not cheap, so if the seat sale is under $400, cash will be a better spend than points.

Tips for earning points 

It is important to remember that not all fairs are equal. On Air Canada, you can earn 100% points and SQM on your spend with Flex Fair. Standard fare earns 25% points and 50% SQM, while Basic only earns 10% points and no SQM. The Basic fare is the cheapest but earns basically no rewards and allows zero changes; you cannot even apply upgrade credits to it. It is important to note that these rules do change, so check AirCanada.com to see what the earnings are on the day of your booking.

Ways to maximise your earnings

• Combine your points with those of other family members to have a shared points pull. More about Aeroplan family sharing here.
• Transfer points from other programs you know you won’t cash in. For example, you can convert your Marriott Bonvoy Points to Aeroplan: 3 Marriott Bonvoy points = 1 Aeroplan point. See the full list of possible conversions here.

Status perks and discounts

Since the program revamp status is easier to reach, even the first level, 25K, offers plenty of amazing benefits. There are core perks of the level, and some that you can choose from based on your goals (free stuff or expedited points earning). Currently 25k status level offers complementary preferred seats, priority airport check-in, two complementary checked bags, priority boarding, and 5 eUpgrade credits.

eUpgrade credits

eUpgrade credits are a really cool perk because you can use them to upgrade to a higher cabin. When avaialbel, you request the desired upgrade using your eUpgrade credits, for example, 3 credits to upgrade to business class. In some instances, there is an additional cash fee, stated upfront. The upgrade is not guaranteed, but it is very possible. You can be notified a few days before or even at the last minute during boarding. In the past, I’ve been able to upgrade to flat-lay business using only 3 credits and no cash (Toronto to Cancun), or 3 credits to premium economy, Toronto to Paris.

Aeroplan support

It’s no secret that Air Canada support is, well, not the best, but when you book on points, you get Aeroplan support, and they are much, much more useful – loyalty goes a long way. I once had to reschedule 2 flights over one weekend due to a snowstorm and still got home in time for a good night’s sleep before work on Monday.

Airport lounge basics

Airport lounges are most often located after security, have a screen with upcoming flight updates, and in some announcements are made over PA. These lounges are typically less crowded, have a wider range of seating options, and in some lounges, there is table service and even showers. Food and drinks are included in the airport lounge access pass. A few lounges, in my experience those that require a purchase or a subscription (ie. Plaza Premium) have limited inclusions when it comes to alcohol and can have fewer food options in smaller lounges.

There are 3 types of airport lounges:

1. Airline lounge: Access to these lounges is gained either through the airline membership program or with premium flight tickets (business and up).
2. Credit card lounges: In North America, for example, Amex lounges are quite common and are only available to specific credit card holders. Certain other credit cards have partnerships with Airline programs (ie. Aeroplan) and can also come with a limited number of annual lounge passes.
3. Subscription or individual purchase lounges: These can be accessed with a same-day admission purchase or an annual subscription. The more common in North America are perhaps Plaza Premium and Priority Pass.

Tips for Accessing Aiport Lounges

• Aeroplan credit cards are limited to AirCanada/AC Partner lounges, so if you do a lot of international travel this might not be the right fit. That being said, nourish your Aeroplan membership because, with 25K status, you get 2 lounge passes.
• Lounge Pass offers a single visit pass which can be a good deal for long layovers. This visit, however, must be booked at least 24 hours before local arrival, so if you’re having last-minute delays this option is out of the question.
• CIBC Aventura® Visa Infinite Card includes 4 lounge passes with an annual fee of CA$139. The card also offers a rebate on one NEXUS application fee every 4 years. Plus you collect Aventura points so this CC is an easy choice which you can use for future flights.
• Priority Pass* includes 1,400+ lounges worldwide, their pricing is a bit tricky. The Standard plan IMO is not really worth it (no free visits). Standard Plus, however, includes 10 “free” visits for an annual fee of US$263 ($26.30/visit) which is pretty good. But, make sure they have lounges where you plan to travel. 
• Smart Traveller app: this app is free and offers up to 30% off for Plaza Premium lounges. And while we’re here, not all Plaza Premium lounges are worth it. Some are very small, and nearly all have limitations on what’s included in the entry fee (no mimosas friends). 
• Dragon Pass: another popular lounge aggregator, once again the base fair (Classic), is not really worth it. But the Preferential package is US$259/year for 8 visits ($32.38/visit) and $35 for guests. These lounges are available globally and in my experience so far have been quite nice.
• Last but not least, the business class tickets nearly always come with lounge access (in addition to other great perks). These tickets can get quite pricey but there are a few ways to get business-class seats for less:
  • upgrading at the time of check-in is often less than the initial ticket rate
  • bidding on the business class seat
  • using your points (for that airline) to update your economy seat. Aeroplan, for example, offers a few upgrade credits to 25K members, more on those here

Let’s be honest, we are all quite reliant on our phones to stay connected, to find directions, or to just doom scroll in bed out of habit. Using your domestic provider data while travelling is typically the most expensive option, so the alternatives are to either find a local SIM card package or get an eSIM. 

Getting a local SIM can be as easy as walking into a cell phone shop at the airport and popping in a new card (Mexico City airport). More often than not, however, it is a quest around town or to the neighbouring resort/mall, and at this point, you may have already had to turn on your data, which, if you are Canadian, immediately costs you at least $14. I’ve been using eSIMs for over a year now and have found them reliable and safe to use.  Admittedly, occasionally they can be more expensive than a physical local SIM card, but the hustle of finding one is a major deterrent for me, especially with multiple country stops.

This post is about a specific eSIM provider, GigSky, but first, let’s cover some common eSIM-related questions. If you are already familiar with how eSIMs work, just scroll past these FAQs.

eSIM FAQ: What’s an eSIM & How does it work

What’s an ESIM

eSIM is a shorthand for embedded SIM. Instead of having to swap out a physical SIM, eSIM gets installed next to your regular SIM digitally, so in simple terms, it’s a digital SIM card. You can even add it to your tablet if that’s where you want your data to live. Using an eSIM offers you data only, typically this data is sourced from a local provider (Orange, T-Mobile, etc). Since it is a data-only card, you do not get a phone number, and you cannot make or receive calls unless, of course, it is a WhatsApp or FaceTime. 

How does it work

eSIM can be installed in two ways: using a QR code or using an app. I found the QR code method a bit tedious since the code needs to be visible on something other than the phone you are installing the eSIM on. Additionally, with a QR code without the App, you don’t get visibility into the status of your data. With an app, you can purchase, top up, and keep track of your usage so you can know if you are running out and will not be just cut off. You do not need a contract to use an eSIM, you simply purchase the data package and top it up as needed. 

Where is the eSIM on my phone

Once your first eSIM is installed, you can turn off your primary SIM with a toggle and turn on the eSIM. This makes sure you do not get charged for roaming usage from your local provider (Rogers, Bell, etc) because that SIM is now completely inactive. On your phone, the eSIM lives in the “Cellular” settings section (iPhone), here’s a screenshot of mine. The one “On” is my Canadian physical SIM. The ones “Off” are the travel eSIMs that I can top up when I return to that location. The “no sim” lines are the eSIMs I removed.

Can I make calls

Not in the traditional sense, but you can make calls using WhatsApp and FaceTime, which I found is perfectly enough, unless of course you need to be on a call or waiting to receive some banking verification code. 

What happens to my phone number

Nothing. It is there, taking a nap behind the scenes, receiving text messages that will flood your phone once you turn your primary SIM card on upon returning home. All of your apps and settings remain intact and you can use iMessage (iPhone) and WhatsApp to stay in touch with your friends and family. In many places around the world, WhatsApp is actually the preferred mode of communication and can even be used to make restaurant reservations. 

About GigSky eSIM

GigSky is a company from Palo Alto, California. When the eSIM was first released, GigSky launched as an Apple partner in 2018. Today, they provide eSIM services on land, cruise ships, and in-flight. The company is also the largest provider of connectivity services to the Airline industry, servicing staff, passengers, and core parts of the plane. Recently, GigSky launched a global partnership with Visa so if you have a US Bank Altitude® Connect Visa Signature® Card, a GigSky data plan is available to you. It is a safe, legitimate business, and a reliable eSIM provider. 

How does GigSky work

Same as any other eSIM plan (described above) GigSky eSIM can be installed using a QR code or through the app (recommended). With GigSky you can have two operators active at the same time, for example, their eSIM and your regular physical card, if you need the calls for example. The plan can be purchased in the app or on gigsky.com. In a nutshell, the steps are:

1. Choose your destination and package
2. Install your eSIM
3. Activate the eSIM on arrival
4. And you are connected!

GigSky connectivity & Service locations

Connectivity is the major differentiator for GigSky. The majority of eSIM companies basically resell network services from local providers (re-route you to it so to say), GigSky, however, is an actual network provider. The company partners with about 400 cellular network providers around the world to have direct access to the servers. So if one network goes down, they will automatically re-connect you to the next, best available service. 

The coolest bit is that you only need one GigSky eSIM for all of the countries you plan to visit, so your cellular settings are not riddled with lines like mine. 

Where can you use GigSky

Currently, GigSky offers connection services in 190 different countries and offshore throughout the Gulf of Mexico and the North Sea. It is also available at sea on over 190 different cruise ships. Trust me when I say that getting connected on a cruise ship is challenging and expensive so if I ever do get on another boat, this is my plan. Data plans are also available for over 20 different airlines, more about in-flight connectivity here. What all this really means is that even if you are island-hopping, you can still stay connected.

The GigSky plan range

Plans are offered by country, region, and location (cruise, offshore, in-flight). GigSky also offers a trial package, 100 MB for free without a credit card, to test drive the data and the app. 

Overall, the packages are competitively priced and in some instances could be a bit more expensive than other brands (ie. AirAlo) but for some destinations are also more affordable. You can get country-specific packages (ie. India), regional (ie. Asia Pacific), or combo (ie. Cruise+Asia Pacific). The choices you need to make, of course is how much data and for how many days. However, if you run out of data on the trip, you can simply top it up within the app.  

The best value, in my opinion, is the unlimited regional packages, for example, the Unlimited European country of your choice or Europe as a whole is $27.99/7 days or $44.99/15 days!

A few eSIM usage tips

• Turn off your domestic SIM and roaming as soon as you take off to avoid accidental charges
• Upon landing, connect to the airport WiFi, find a strong connection spot, and stay there until your eSIM is activated 
• Check the connection by turning off the WiFi
• You might need to make sure roaming is turned “On” for your new eSIM
• In “Cellular” settings, scroll down and turn off roaming for any apps you know you won’t need so they are not using data in the background

• Easy to purchase, easy to activate. You can buy the eSIM online or within the app. The instructions are easy to follow, and the customer support is built into the app.
• Airalo now offers data, talk, text options for many locations, which gives the user a set number of minutes and texts they can send from a local number. 
• Options for geographies and data package sizes are great. You can get a single country, or a regional SIM, for example, Europe, so there is no need to find new physical SIM cards at every stop of your European road trip. • Customer support is quite fast and is very helpful. I’ve had to use it on a couple of occasions (both times because my internet connection at the time of activation was bad) and they were able to fix my issues efficiently. 

Airalo cons:

• You do have to have a stable internet connection to connect to a network. My go-to solution, of cours,e is checking the airport wifi on arrival. Quite often, you can find a stable spot, you just need to spend a few minutes there waiting for things to connect (5-10 minutes average)
• It could be more expensive than a local physical SIM, so here really just see what your priorities are. Sometimes SIM cards are sold directly at the airport but if not you may have to go on a bit of a hunt. Do you have time to do that and can go without the internet until you find it? Keep in mind that turning on your home country’s SIM for even a minute comes with a charge. With Rogers, for example, that’s $12 in the US and $15 internationally, the key here is the 24-hour window is in your home timezone not the time zone you are travelling in.

Do you always purchase travel insurance? When I first started traveling in my 20s it certainly wasn’t something I thought about deeply. But as time went on insuring my health and belongings became a more prominent thought. I will admit that for some odd reason, I used to only purchase travel insurance when traveling outside of Canada but watching a travel companion’s suitcase disappear in transit to the airport made me reconsider my choices. These days all my travel, international or domestic, is insured. There are many insurance companies out there you can find with a quick search offering a wide range of pricing. Today, however, I’d like to talk about budget travel insurance with battleface, a company that focuses on travel insurance exclusively.

Quick company background

battleface is a new travel insurance product for the Canadian market created in collaboration with Hunter McCorquodale and underwritten by Northbridge General Insurance Corporation. The policy can be purchased before or during the trip and allows you to build a comprehensive yet affordable package for a single domestic or international trip. 

According to the company’s CEO Sasha Gainullin, battleface is “designed specifically with the modern traveler in mind, providing affordable and accessible protection”. Needless to say, my interest was piqued. 

What your insurance includes

There are quite a few unique inclusions in the battleface package that you might not be able to find with other insurers including typically uninsured areas and sports activities. But let’s dive into the details. The entire purchasing process took me 5 minutes and all documents were available immediately.

Please note: Pricing is based on age, destination, and duration of the trip with per-day pricing. Therefore, the amounts might differ per individual based on their unique needs. My total package was  $22.52 CA for a 7-day trip to the Dominican Republic and did not include sports coverage. 

Insurance inclusions:

• Trip cancelation (up to $20,000) and interruption (up to $1,000).
• Medical and emergency expenses ($5,000,000) and hospital benefits.
• Personal accident ($50,000).
• Personal liability (up to $500,000)
• Baggage ($2,000) plus personal money and passport ($500).

During the flight

1. Change all your clocks (phone, laptop, watch, etc) right away to the time zone you will be landing in.
2. Sleep during the first half of the flight. The goal here is to stay awake for 12 hours from the point you wake up on the plane to the point that you expect to go to sleep in the new time zone.
3. If you use melatonin, take it 45 min before you want to fall asleep on the plane, 0.5-1 mg.
4. Take advantage of eye masks and earplugs to improve the quality of your sleep and minimize jet lag.
5. Avoid alcohol. While it can help you fall asleep the quality of that sleep will be low causing drowsiness and unrest the next day.
6. Stay away from caffeine. Coffee has about 12 hours of shelf life in your body so even if you feel tired it will still prevent you from falling asleep.

Upon arrival

1. Fight through the jet lag and make sure to go outside and expose yourself to bright light.
2. Avoid wearing sunglasses if you are outside in the morning, this exposure to the sun will reduce melatonin.
3. Do wear sunglasses if you are out in the afternoon to encourage the production of melatonin.
4. Try to exercise or walk for 20-30minutes.
5. Adjust your eating schedule to the new time zone. Resist the urge to eat off your regular schedule.
6. If you need to nap, keep it to 10-20 minutes maximum so you don’t use up quality sleepiness too early in the day.
7. Use melatonin if you cannot fall asleep at the appropriate time naturally.

I’ve tested this method on multiple occasions on 7+ hour-long flights following all steps and occasionally skipping some (like alcohol and coffee) and personally found it a great way to beat the transatlantic jetlag.

…Is not always the cheapest ticket. It all depends on your needs, comfort, and flexibility. The lowest fare flights almost never include luggage and require you to pay for a seat selection, do not allow any changes, cancelations, or upgrades, and often have connections, some quite long and overnight. It is important to compare the flight exclusions with the level above to see if it might actually be better to pay a bit more to secure a seat of your choice and include luggage.

24-hour check-in 

Available for pretty much any airline these days and I highly recommend taking advantage of it to get better seats, especially for airlines that don’t offer complimentary seat selection. The longer you wait the closer to the bathroom you’ll sit (unless of course, you have status). The other benefit of early check-in is that if you don’t have checked baggage you can head straight to security and that’ll be your only line. This is also a time to see what upgrade options you might have, for flights with unsold seats in higher cabins there might be some reasonable options for upgrading to premium or even business.

Food 

Whether or not you ate beforehand you will likely want to snack if your flight is over an hour so bring snacks with you because in-flight options will be minimal, small, and overpriced. Most airlines no longer offer complimentary meals for flights under 5 hours either so that’s another meal you should bring with you or you’ll be limited to refrigerated salads and dry sandwiches offered by the airline. Some food, like sandwiches, can be brought through security. Most flights include a meal service if you are flying premium economy so it is worth checking ahead of time.

Avoiding jet lag

I tend to always book flights that maximize my daytime at the final destination, arrive early, and leave later in the day, which often means that the departure flight is either early morning or overnight. To avoid jet lag the best thing you can do is go to bed early and sleep on the plane. For flights that take you into a completely different timezone, your sleep pattern should be planned in such a way that you are mentally ready to welcome your new country at the time of day it is. For example, if you arrive in the morning sleep on the plane as you would at home if you arrive in the evening try to stay awake most of the flight so you get sleepy at the right time in the new timezone. For longer flights always check if your plane has in-flight entertainment so that you don’t get surprised by the pastel shades of the seat in front of you with nothing to watch or listen to and only the SkyMall to read for 6 hours.
