Bath is a fairly small town which you can easily explore on foot. Roseate Villa Bath is located a scenic ten-minute walk from the city centre, through the iconic Pulteney Bridge. The Vibe & Shared spaces

The property encompasses two Victorian houses, converted into a boutique hotel. The structure has a historic character, noticeable from a distance. Separate from the main road by a brick fence, the Villa is surrounded by a tranquil private garden. A portion of the garden is used as the restaurant terrace during warmer months, while the more secluded area has loungers and sitting areas that guests can take advantage of. 

Immediately to the right of the front desk is The Henrietta Bar & Restaurant. Here, guests can enjoy a slow breakfast, afternoon tea, and dinner. The restaurant is a destination, so this room fills with locals and tourists alike.

Bar & Restaurant 

The Henrietta Bar & Restaurant is split into two spaces, the bar and lounge and the main dining area. The hotel kitchen uses 95% fresh local produce, leaning on the SLOW philosophy: seasonal, local, organic, wholesome foods, keeping their carbon footprint to a minimum.

For breakfast, guests can opt for a continental breakfast or choose items from the kitchen menu. The continental breakfast includes hot and cold beverages, yoghurt, fruits, cereal, and freshly baked pastries. The kitchen menu is a selection of larger breakfast items like the Full English Breakfast, Eggs Benedict, and Avocado Toast, among other items. Kitchen sweets are decadent pancakes, which we strongly recommend trying. No vacation is complete without a mimosa, and Roseate’s version is the Buck’s Fizz. 

Afternoon tea is served in the main dining room and on the terrace in the summer months. Available Monday through Sunday, this is a quintessential English tradition brought to life in a historic space. Henrietta Restaurant & Bar offers one of the best afternoon tea experiences in the area. 

In the evenings, patrons gather at Henrietta to get a taste of modern European cuisine. The starter menu includes terrines, prawns, pickled and otherwise prepared vegetable dishes, and a seasonal salad. The mains range from seafood to steak and naturally includes an English pie. For dessert, there are baked treats and cheese options.

Inside the Suite

The villa has 21 rooms and suites, each with a slightly different or completely unique decor. Each luxurious room is a combination of vintage decor charm with sophisticated modern finishes. In the room, guests will find flat screen TVs, Hypnos beds, goose down duvets and Egyptian cotton linen, robes and yoga mats tucked away in the closet. Water, coffee, tea, and biscuits are ready for guests in the cabinet above the fridge cabinet.

Luxury Junior and The Hideaway suites have large luxurious bathrooms with chic bathtubs, separate showers, heated floors, and a double vanity. The rest of the rooms have comfortable modern showers with the same luxurious finishes and bath supplies.

The comfortable rooms with friendly decor begin to quickly feel like home. It is tempting to spend the morning with a cup of tea, looking out into the garden or cosy up on a chair with a good book.

L’Escape Hotel

Do sleep in North End Halifax

North End Halifax isn’t far from the Downtown, but its wide range of offerings and unique atmosphere set a different scene from the city centre. Here, low-rise houses with decorative porches line the streets. The laidback energy calls for slow strolls around the neigbourhood, peaking into independent shops and cafes and enjoying meals outdoors. In the evening, the energy vibrates through the dimly lit windows of bars and restaurants where people pack in to enjoy some of the city’s best culinary experiences. Stay one, to two nights to properly enjoy the neigbourhood.

What to do in North End Halifax

Explore the Forth Needham Memorial Park and the Hydrostone neigbourhood, known for its’ circa-1920s row houses and the Hydrostone Market. Pop into the 14 Bells Fine Art Gallery before crossing over to Agricola. Slow stroll through Agricola Street, stopping by various boutique shops and get lost at the Halifax Vintage Co-op. Find unique housewares and decor at Isle at Ease or stationery at Cahier Stationery & Life Goods. Pick up a whole new outfit shopping across small local clothing stores like Sattva Boutique, Nor’easter Apparel, Slowly Slowly, and Meyvn Sustainable Apparel.

As you walk, pay attention to the many street art pieces found across North End Halifax, this can be its own guided tour. For a more active adventure, rent some skates and cruise around the Emera Oval.

Breakfast, lunch, or call it brunch

North End Halifax is home to many exciting restaurants, bars, and cafes, many of which are open during the day. But first, pick up a coffee at Rambler’s or Espresso 46 on the opposite side of the neigbourhood. Espresso 46 is ajesent to Warehouse Market, where crowds of locals come to stock up on fresh farm vegetables, baked goods, and butchery products.

Have a casual breakfast or lunch at Luke’s Small Goods, where tasty sandwiches are made among interesting pantry staples and baked goods. The menu might seem simple, but each sandwich is packed with flavour. Even the typically simple cucumber sandwich stood on par with fresh Italian cold cuts. Add chips and a pickle to any sando for two bucks. 

Opt-in for a sit-down lunch at Edna, nestled at the edge of the neighbourhood on Gottingen Street. This bistro has a cosy atmosphere with a laidback vibe, serves up seasonal menus from brunch to seafood suppers. The restaurant has been around for over a decade and has been award-winning from the start. Cafe Aroma Latino is a great alternative for those looking for a taste of Central American cuisine. This family restaurant and grocer offers a great selection of homemade dishes, handmade empanadas, and other tasty snacks. All art in the space is made by co-op students, and proceeds from sales are donated to the community.

Dinners and nightcaps in North End Halifax

Bar Kismet is the spot that brings folks from Downtown to the North End nightly. This restaurant, set in a classic low-rise house with an appealing storefront, has made many lists: 50 Best, 100 Best, and even has a three-heart listing in the Frommer’s Guide. The backbar is packed with speciality spirits, the bar menu has a robust selection of craft cocktails and unique wines, and the kitchen efficiently preps mouthwatering fresh seafood and handmade pasta dishes. 

Down on Young Street, surrounded by neigbourhood restaurants, is The Ostrich Club, another fantastic dining destination located in Hydrostone Market. The restaurant is operated by an all-women team: GM and sommelier Alana Steel, Chef Moira Murray, and bar manager Lindsay Jones. Chef Moira was a contestant on the most recent season of Top Chef Canada (came in 2nd), and Lindsay is well known in the mixology scene as a talented competitive bartender. Naturally, the menu is a smooth blend of well-paired beverages and fine-tuned, intricately plated dishes. Every dish was delicious, but the Shrimp Dumpling is what people come back here for.

Here on Agricola Street, between shops and restaurants, you will also find Compass Distillers. The company started as a production facility but quickly pivoted to opening a bar and tasting room, inviting people in to see their beautiful copper stills and taste the product lineup. All spirits (gins, vodka, rum, whiskies) are made from Nova Scotian-grown grains and other raw ingredients, like sugar and molasses. The terrace and tasting room are a fun spot for a happy hour, whether you choose to taste the spirits or try one of the speciality cocktails. 

Mare Knight, bartender at Compass Distillers, walked us through a 4-pour tasting of in-house-made spirits. 

A local staple for late-night drinks and live music is the Narrows Public House. The pub is only three years old, but built with parts and memorabilia from other historic places, giving it a historic vibe. The Narrows is open all day and has a lush food menu, but it is the drinks, the stories, and the cask ale that people come here for. “This city used to be run by the Hell’s Angels, did you know?” the barkeep shared while pouring an Oban 14 dram for me, “Go on,” I leaned in. 

Bonus: If time is of the essence, but you’re looking to taste as much as possible, consider a walking food tour.

Where to stay in North Halifax

Brewery Park Hotel, located in the centre of the neigbourhood, is a great place to make home for the weekend. It is a self-catering style property built to blend into the classic Halifax architecture. There are King and Queen suites, all of which have comfortable platform beds, sitting areas, and a kitchenette, or what they call a wet bar. All units have beautiful wood finishes, spotlight local art, have plenty of storage, and large windows allowing the light to illuminate the unit. On the ground floor is the hotel’s front desk, open during office hours, where you can store your luggage.

Alternatively, there is a lovely boutique hotel called The Halifax Rooftop, which has an outdoor pool, rooftop terrace, and a sauna.

Level up in Downtown Halifax

Downtown Halifax stretches from the Public Gardens to the Waterfront. The look and feel of the neighbourhood changes as you move towards the water, from city living to casual harbour atmosphere. Each day spent in the city can be different, from historic explorations to casual evenings on the harbour or energetic nights out. Spend two, to three nights in the city centre. 

What to do in Halifax

Spend time in the Halifax Harbour

The Halifax Harbour is one of the deepest and largest ice-free natural harbours in the world. The boardwalk stretches 4.4 kilometres along the harbour, offering a serene view of the water on one side and bustling leisurely life on the other. Along the boardwalk are restaurants, resting areas, marinas with access to public boat tours, and public playgrounds. 

One of the newest developments in the Halifax Harbour is Queen’s Marque, a new waterfront neigbourhood encompassing residential units, a hotel, multiple restaurants, and a public square with a staircase descending into the water (entering the harbour is not recommended). Perched above the harbour, on top of Mystic Halifax, is a 60-foot art installation called Tidal Beacon. The sculpture is interactive and responds to tides, weather, and the surrounding environment.

A great way to experience the harbour is from the water. J Farwell operates public sailing tours directly from the harbour with five daily experiences to choose from (private charters are also an option). The Sunset Wine & Cheese Sail, for example, takes two-and-a-half hours of cruising around the harbour with a small group of guests. The experience includes a hosted tasting of four Nova Scotia wines accompanied by a loaded cheese and meats board ($176 pp). The Beneteau Oceanis 45 yacht sails along the narrows of the Northwest Arm, where you can see beautiful coastal homes, the shipyards, and if you get lucky, even some porpoises leaping out of the silky water.

Walk and learn in Downtown Halifax

The interior heart of the city is at the Halifax Public Gardens, a Victorian-era garden built in the year of Canadian Confederation (1867). Across the park, you will find fountains, statues, gazebos, and a dahlia flower garden. Plenty of wildlife swims in the garden’s pond, unencumbered by the human visitors the ducks often nestle along the walking paths. Free public tours are available by reservation. 

Another notable historic stop is, of course, the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site. The site is a star-shaped fortress overlooking the city and the harbour from a hill. Here, visitors can learn about the military history of Halifax or go on a ghost tour, whichever fits their travel mood most. Keep an ear out for the daily cannon fire at 12 PM, a ritual performed since 1857.

For a cultural break, visit the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. The gallery museum houses an impressive Indigenous collection of arts, Ta’n a’sikatikl sipu’l | Confluence, which occupies an entire floor and includes seasonal showcases. In addition to the permanent collection and touring shows, the Art Gallery is also home to Nova Scotia’s favourite artist, Maud Lewis, whose tiny house can be seen inside the space.

If you find yourself in Halifax on a Saturday, make sure to visit the Alexander Keith’s Brewery Market. Set in a historic brick building, the market is a city staple for locals and tourists alike. Sixty-five vendors set up shop weekly, offering farm produce, prepared meals, baked goods, art and other locally produced goods. Chefs, shoppers, and tourists can be seen in the market side by side, packing their totes while live music is playing in the background. 

Bonus: Pop into the new-ish Halifax Central Library to soak in the architecture and get a different perspective on the city from the higher-up floors and the terrace.

Any time meals in Downtown Halifax

When on vacation, a leisurely meal is always recommended, and Halifax’s culinary scene is here to provide. Begin the day with a pop-in at the Two If By Sea Cafe, Weird Harbour Espresso Bar, Coffeeology Espresso Co, or Terra Cafe for your morning coffee kick and a breakfast pastry. 

Take the afternoon meal break at Queen’s Marque’s many restaurants. Daryâ, for example, is located directly on the harbour. The restaurant has a spacious outdoor terrace and beautifully decorated interior with a menu focused on Mediterranean cuisine. Bar Sofia, on the other hand, is focused on sharing plates, taking inspiration from the traditional Argentinian kitchen. Drift is open from early breakfast to late-night meals. This menu is focused on regional ingredients and the community behind them.

Set on the far end of the Halifax Harbour, Water Polo is a destination in its own right. The restaurant opened over a year ago, but this year they opened the outdoor terrace. Exiting directly onto the boardwalk, with an unobstructed view of Georges Island, the restaurant has a French Riviera feel, intentionally set with nautical decor. This landmark seafood restaurant offers a robust selection of fresh seafood meals (and some turf, of course), from decadent sushi rolls to seafood towers and grilled specialities. The cocktail menu is equally exciting, putting forward interesting takes on the classics.

Memorable dining moments

The main culinary attraction in Halifax is Mystic, positioned directly in Queen’s Marque, under the Tidal Beacon sculpture. The restaurant is built into the environment with floor-to-ceiling windows blending the dining room with the harbour. The restaurant operates like a fine-tuned musical instrument, with every team member moving in effortless synergy. At the centre of the room is an open kitchen where every dish is artfully plated with steady hands and kitchen tweezers.

Mystic’s menu is created by Chef Malcolm Campbell, who sharpened his skills across multiple Michelin-starred kitchens, from Gordon Ramsay’s Hospital Road to Auberge de l’Ile Barbe (Lyon, France). The menu, split into Fauna and Biota, uses ingredients sourced from local farmers and producers or foraged by the restaurant’s team. Chef Campbell is often seen at the Saturday market, picking out ingredients for the weekend, while some members of the restaurant team forage daily.

Guests have an option of ordering a la carte or letting the kitchen guide them through a blind tasting, known as the Discovery Menu. Seated in the galley, you will get a front-row seat to the kitchen orchestra. This menu changes daily, and every dish feels personal, especially when paired with the sommelier’s wine selections. Each Discovery Menu opens with an amuse-bouche, a teaser of what’s to come.

Happy hours and liquid libations 

Between lunches and dinners are happy hours and nightcaps, and a visit to a new city should not be wasted on repeat stops. With a 4-6 PM happy hour, Obladee wine bar is a popular spot among locals. This casual wine bar is focused on sustainable and low-intervention wines, served alongside a full kitchen menu, so it can be your complete evening stop. 

Highwayman, on the other hand, is an energetic, happening spot most know for its cocktails. This 40-seat restaurant is set in a historic building and made world news when bar manager Keegan McGregor won the World Class Global Bartender of the Year title in Diageo’s Global World Class competition in 2024. The craft cocktails are paired with seasonally fresh Spanish tapas and pintxos.

Back in the Halifax Harbour is Peacock Wine Bar, which opens at 4 PM, just in time for the early peckish mood. The restaurant has an impressive wine selection accompanied by a chef-driven menu of small plates and homemade pastas. Fresh pints of Guinness and casual banter can always be found at the Old Triangle Irish Alehouse. Beer fans can join an Alexander Keith’s Brewery tour, spend an afternoon at the Stillwell Beergarden (seasonal), or taste some local small brews at 2 Crows Brewing Co..

Where to stay in Downtown Halifax

Daytrips from Halifax

A must-visit to Peggy’s Cove 

Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse and Village are perhaps the most popular tourism attraction in Halifax. This can be a half-day or a full-day visit if you are open to adding a hike to your agenda. Visitors can explore the village, stroll along the shore, settle in for a picnic, or grab a seafood chowder at the Sou’Wester Gift & Restaurant Company Ltd.. If time permits, walk the Crystal Crescent Beach coastal loop to Pennant Point (10km) or choose one of the biking and hiking trails nearby. 

Getting to Peggy’s Cove: Rent a car, take a taxi ($80-$100 each way), or join one of many available tours. 

Visit local wineries 

A lesser-known fact about Halifax, and Nova Scotia, is that it has a wonderful wine region, well-positioned for white and sparkling wines. The region actually has a signature white wine varietal, called Tidal Bay, a crisp, fresh, aromatic wine made from 100% Nova Scotia-grown grapes (specific varietals). An hour and change drive will take you directly into the vineyards.

Benjamin Bridge is the local pride and joy, bottles of which you will likely spot in most restaurants and on the sunset sail. Recently certified as a B Corp, this is a family-owned farm winery open for visits year-round. In the summer months, the winery has a wonderful outdoor terrace, while the cold winters are embraced with winter vineyard adventures, firepits, and holiday lights.

Ten minutes away is Lightfoot & Wolfville Vineyards, which also makes for a great lunch stop. Another local favourite with a spectacular view and a great selection of German-style wines. This family-owned farm vineyard practices biodynamic viticulture, producing minimal intervention wines. Make sure to try it if you see it on a restaurant menu.

Getting to Halifax

Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) is a half-hour drive from the city (plus-minus depending on the traffic) or an hour by transit. Taxi is always an option, but the public transit actually works quite well. The bus stop at the airport is well marked. Regional Express 320 will take you Downtown ($4.75 cash, see schedule).

Luxembourg City, despite its naturally small size, is a showcase of the vast history and influences of the neighbouring countries. It is a multicultural city filled with UNESCO World Heritage monuments, museums, and beautiful neighbourhoods that often feel like their own cities. There is also a wealth of cultural activities to explore.

Local basics

Currency: Euro

Language: As a country landlocked by France, Germany, and Belgium, Luxembourg is a place of many languages. Luxembourgish, French, and German are official languages, but many people, at least in the city, also speak English. 

When to visit: July and August are the warmest months and therefore the highest tourist peak season. I visited in October and aside from the rain, the weather was quite lovely. Turning leaves creates a poetic fall atmosphere.

Public transit: Luxembourg public transit is free across the country and has been so since 2020. There are buses and streetcars moving around the city, including a line which loops through the shopping village (Ville Haute). Find maps and connections on Mobiliteit.lu app or on the transit website. Most stops also have extensive system maps.

Sightseeing tip: Some of the attractions are free to enter on certain days. Quite a few are included in the LuxembourgPass; check your wishlist against the pass inclusions. Pass fees start at €21 per person for one-day access and go up to €66 for 3-5 people for three-day access.

Luxembourg’s walking paths

The city can be easily explored on foot with casual coffee and snack stops sprinkled between sightseeing and entertainment. Twenty Tour company offer free guided walking tours, but if you choose to go on a self-guided walking tour, a great place to start is on Boulevard Royal at the foot of Adolphe Bridge. The bridge is a double-decked arch bridge that serves as a one-way route for road traffic across the Pétrusse. The view from the bridge is quite wonderful, and if you take the underpassageway, the scenery will be framed by brick arches.

Take a stroll through Place Guillaume II, a town square in the heart of the Ville Haute quarter. In the winter, the square houses one of the city’s Christmas Markets. If timing works out, pop into Notre-Dame de Luxembourg, to take in the tall arched roof and stained glass windows.

Most walking paths will also lead you to the Gëlle Fra memorial and Place de la Constitution, or as the locals call her, The Golden Lady. The monument is set in memory of those who perished in WWI. The square sits on the edge of a wall, looking over Parcs de la Pétrusse, travelling theme parks, farmers’ markets, and the annual Christmas market set up here, at the Golden Lady’s feet. 

Galeries Lafayette is a shopping centre, but at the top of the shopping centre is a spacious outdoor terrace with a restaurant and a sprawling view of the city. Last summer, the terrace cafe was set up by Veuve Clicquot, yellow umbrellas reflecting the sun.

Experience the remnants of the old city

A visit to the Grund quarter is a must, this part of the city is set below the Downtown. The Grund is a UNESCO cultural and architectural heritage site and home to many locals. Here you will find restaurants, pubs, museums, and outdoor art galleries. Partially surrounded by the old city walls, the Grund feels like a charming historic village with pastel-coloured homes with charcoal roofs curving along the Alzette River. The easiest way to access the Grund is by using the elevator near Cité Judiciaire. The observation deck near the elevator offers a picturesque view of the Grund. From here, you can walk along the wall to the other side of the city, looking down at the Grund. 

While here, you can visit the Neimënster Abbey, which now operates as a cultural and conference centre. Various events take place in the Pais (square) of the abbey throughout the year, and sometimes the entire square can be a temporary art installation. 

Casemates du Bock will take you into the rock tunnels surrounding the Grund, one of the most important historical points in Luxembourg. This is a subterranean defence system made up of many kilometres of tunnels, which you can walk through on your own, stopping to look out through the windows onto the city.

In the Grund, you will also find the National Museum of Natural History (MNHNL), which, as the name suggests, contains a collection of special exhibits focused on nature and science. The collections include botanical, mineralogy, meteorites and tektites, palaeontology, and many more.

Galleries, museums & Monuments

National Art & History Museum (MNHA, or Nationalmusée um Fëschmaart) is the city’s art and history museum with a large archaeological collection. What looks like a white cube from the outside is combined with an older structure, which houses older art and artefacts. The building is set in the heart of the UNESCO-listed Old Town, so you will likely walk by it more than once.

Nearby, you will undoubtedly see the Grand Ducal Palace, which serves as the residence and official workplace of the Grand Duke. Guided tours are offered in the summer months. 

Luxembourg City History Museum (or Lëtzebuerg City Museum) is a fun and interactive way to learn about the city’s history. The permanent exhibit, The Luxembourg Story, is quite fascinating, looking back at the history from the 10th century to today. Temporary exhibitions range from historic to cultural, looking at topics beyond Luxembourg City. The museum also offers a mix of workshops, if you’d like to get creative on your trip. The museum is larger than it seems and can easily take up multiple hours. Don’t miss the outdoor terrace for the view.

Art lovers will also enjoy a visit to Villa Vauban, home to a collection of European art pieces from the 17th to 19th century and Luxembourgish art from the 20th century to today. The building is surrounded by the Municipal Park of Luxembourg, which occasionally has interesting pop-ups with live music and a temporary bar.

Mudam Luxembourg Museum is a new structure within an old structure, or rather, surrounded by the remains of it. It is a great, medium-sized museum that features a range of touring contemporary exhibitions and a permanent collection. The building itself is quite beautiful, with geometric shapes making it look like a crystal from certain angles. 

Photo tip: On the way to the Mudam, you will also pass Philharmonie Luxembourg with the large Luxembourg sign.

Bonus stop off-the-beaten-path: Coque Sports Center (D’Coque). This spaceship-looking structure is the national sports and cultural centre. The centre houses various fitness facilities and a (nude) spa; day passes are available for visitors. The building is surrounded by a lovely park, playground, and a maze garden.

Entertinament & nightlife 

As with any major city, something is happening in Luxembourg throughout the year. The VisitLuxembourg app is a great way to learn about daily happenings, from large events to small comedy pop-ups.

Weekdays across the city can be a little quiet. But on the weekends, the city centre is overcome with life, with people mingling across bars and restaurants, often spilling out on the streets in every weather. In the winter, multiple Christmas Markets are set up in the city, and you can visit more than one per day. Each market has a selection of prepared food and beverage vendors and speciality shops. With music playing, these markets become makeshift bars for people looking to escape their regular social spots.

Tip: Most bars will take a deposit on a mug, which you can reuse throughout the market and return for change when you are done.

Where to eat & Drink in Luxembourg

A fun way to get a taste of any new city is with a walking Food Tour, and Luxembourg has one, operated by a local company, Sightseeing.Lu. On this food tour, you will learn about local specialities and visit some of the oldest restaurants.

Plenty of restaurants are scattered throughout Luxembourg City, some casual, some elevated, and many family-owned. 

Rôtisserie Ardennaise, for example, offers fine dining French cuisine while Max + Moritz across the street serve delicious shareable small plates. Brasserie Restaurant L’Hêtre Beim Musée, is a great spot for an elevated meal with wine service. Nearby is Bar Lady Jane, a speakeasy-style cocktail bar on the upper floor (password can be found on their Facebook page). 

If you are looking for cocktails, look at The 18th Bar at Hotel Place d’Armes and Paname, whose bartender, François Bachmann, recently competed in the Diageo Global World Class Finals. Head to The Spirit, Kaale Kaffi, BARBAR or the Tube for a more casual vibe. 

For casual meals and snacks, visit Pâtisserie Hoffmann or Kaempff-Kohler for pastries and traditional Luxembourgish snacks, Munchies Burger for a juice burger, Nnert de Steiler for traditional hearty meals, or Restaurant Himalaya for hearty Indian food. 

Boutique Léa Linster Delicatessen specialises in freshly-baked madelines, served with local Crémant or coffee, is an absolute must for a sweet treat. The cafe is located steps away from the Grand Ducal Palace.

Day trips

Luxembourg is a small country and within 30 minutes or under, you can get to a wide variety of activities, from visiting castles to the wine routes along the Moselle River and multi-day hiking trails. Half an hour out of the city, for example, you will find Haff Réimech and Biodiversum nature reserve. A cluster of ponds and lakes connected with mixed paths and fields form a protected wildlife heaven. The main structure is quite futuristic-looking, simultaneously blending in with the environment through materials and standing out due to its stark, dark shape. 

Visitors can learn about local wildlife and sustainability in the centre, hike or bike across the biosphere (easy paths) or take a moment bird watching from a designated cabin above one of the small lakes.

Ireland’s oldest city, Waterford, turned 1111 this year. Founded in 914 AD by Vikings, it is the country’s oldest urban centre and while Dublin has outgrown it vastly since, Waterford is an important heritage stop in Ireland’s history. 

Stretching along the Atlantic coast, County Waterford encompasses scenic coastal villages, notable historic cities, and breathtaking rocky beaches. The wine capital of Ireland and the birthplace of St Patrick’s Parade, Waterford’s deep history serves as a backdrop for everything in the region, but the personality of the city is found in its people, gathering in its many pubs over hearty food and (mostly) cold pints.

The Viking beginnings and the tall tales of Waterford 

Waterford is set on the shore of River Suir, connecting the two river banks by an arched bridge. The river flows through 185 kilometres of County Tipperary and County Waterford before entering the Celtic Sea section of the Atlantic Ocean (Muir Cheilteach in Irish). Despite the distance, on a nice weather day, you might be lucky enough to see dolphins from the terrace of the Waterford Marina Hotel, a newly renovated boutique hotel we called home during this visit. 

The historic centre is just a block away from the river, made up of a museum cluster, The Viking Triangle, and cobblestone side streets dotted with beautiful pubs, storefronts, and restaurants. We meet our Epic Walking Tour guide on the steps of the Cathedral Square, joined by couples and families from around the world. Pivoting through the city streets, we walk through a thousand years of history, passing through the old city gates, pausing in the Viking Triangle, and hearing often comedic stories behind other monuments, dating back to 1190 AD.

A fun alternative is The Bridgerton Tour, focused on the history and scandalous affairs of the Bishop’s Palace.

For many years, Waterford was the trading centre of Ireland, and much of this history is shared through its museum cluster: Medieval Museum (aka  Waterford Treasures Museum), Bishop’s Palace, The Irish Museum of Time, and The Irish Silver Museum – all included in the Freedom of Waterford Pass.

Many of the museums and city buildings include a portion of the old city wall. The Medieval Museum, which contains perhaps the biggest piece, is where we step into a dim wine cellar to learn about the city’s wine trade. This bit of history I was not expecting, and was abruptly stumped by the wine trade displays, we are on an island, after all. My mind haze was interrupted by Donnchadh O Ceallachain, the museum keeper, who summarised the important bits of it all, guiding me through the building, sharing stories, pointing out artefacts, and architectural quirks.  

While no wine was produced on the island, tons of it were imported by ships from Rome, Greece, France, and other European regions. For a time, wine was used as currency by Vikings to pay off their Irish overlord, King Brian Boru. As the city grew, the business of wine became synonymous with its politics. Gascony wine merchant Eymar de Godard, for example, held the mayoral role four times, starting in 1304. A century later, another wine merchant, Peter Rice, became a three-time mayor, passing the leadership torch to his son James, who held on to that position for eleven terms. 

At the time, water quality was incredibly unhealthy, making wine a safe hydration choice and Waterford the greatest importer of wine in Ireland. Remnants of wine history are on display at the Medieval Museum in Peter Rice’s wine cellar, while a 13th-century stone-vaulted wine vault was recently found completely intact under the Bishop’s Palace.

History through artefacts

The remaining two floors of the Medieval Museum show the dark and joyful centuries of Waterford’s history, the false kings, religious prosecutions, and civil war rebels. The rest of the museums are much smaller, each with its own niche focus. The Irish Museum of Time, for example, houses an impressive collection of clocks and watches, with 600+ timepieces on display and in the vaults. This visit can be a short stroll or hours spent examining the intricate ticking creations.

Reginald’s Tower and the Viking boat at its foot are the most popular attractions in the city. The tower was built in three stages and had many lives begining as a Viking fort, the strongest point of the medieval defensive walls. Over the years, it served as a mint, a storage facility for instruments of war, and for about 50 years operated a women’s prison on the top floor. Nicknamed “the ballroom” because of the less-than-ideal temperature conditions (women would dance to stay warm), the prison has many unique stories, including one of Meg Collender, who frequented the Ballroom 150 times for drunk and disorderly. 

At the foot of the tower is a replica Viking Long Boat, called Vadrafjordr, the Viking name for Waterford. The longboat is modelled after the famous Viking ships found at Roskilde, in Denmark, one of which was built in Ireland using Irish oak. The boat was not built for use on water, merely for skills training and decorative purposes. But according to our tour guide, Vadrafjordr had its moment at sea during a Winter Festival a few years back, carrying Santa across the river, slowly sinking en route.

Everything happens in the pub

Upon arrival in Dublin, I was met by a local travel community friend who naturally recommended a gathering at the pub. As a novice to Irish pubs, I followed him through the busy streets past many pubs until we reached the acceptable, less-touristy option. In County Waterford, there are no touristy pubs. 

Irish pubs are generationally family-owned community hubs offering live music, fantastic food, and uniquely maximalist decor. Stunning from inside out, similar in feel yet uniquely different from one another, each pub is a reflection of the community it serves. 

Tucked away behind the Reginald’s Tower is The Reg, built around the 900-year-old medieval City Wall. This pub is an institution, split into multiple areas across two floors. The main dining room is respectfully designed to include two Sallyports – stone arches previously used as passages, now converted into dining booths, bringing guests literally inside the City Wall.

Taking a brief break from examining the historic decor and robust whisky selection, I locked my eyes on the menu. Salads, seafood, chicken wings, duck, and Katsu chicken curry … I felt my eyes grow bigger than my stomach, finally landing on Prawns, Pimentro, and Chorizo as a starter and Dunmore Seafood Pie as the main. This was going to be a meal to beat, we both agreed, ending dinner with local whisky. 

The prawn starter at The Reg was an immediate hit, flavourful, fresh, and with a hint of spice, it’s a dish I could eat weekly. And then there was the fluffy mashed potato pie with gratinated cheese, blanketing the decadent seafood mix, the thought of which still makes me salivate. 

The Reg offers live music nightly, and in the summer, they host The Churchyard Sessions in the nearby square every Saturday and a few select Fridays, bringing the pub and live music outside. Up until recently, Waterford was also home to Waterford Distillery, which unfortunately had to close recently, but a few bottles of it are still available on the shelves at local pubs. If you spot one, definitely give it a try.

On the opposite end of the city is a cluster of smaller pubs: Tully’s Bar Waterford, Thomas Maher Bar, and J. & K. Walsh Victorian Spirit Grocer. Establishments in Ireland close earlier than those in Canada and closing hours found on Google might not match the real hours. On this particular weeknight, J. & K. Walsh Victorian Spirit Grocer was shut by 10 PM, and the rest followed within the hour. “But then, there is the lock-in,” locals kept insisting in mixed conversations, a term for when the closing time comes, but you get to stay back with the barkeep behind closed doors.

Our nightcap route led to the Thomas Maher Bar, an 1886 long pub with an enclosed terrace out back. A few small wooden chairs and tables lined against the wall face the traditional wood bar stocked top to bottom with whisky, top shelf lined with dusty vintage Guinness bottles. 

Before Guinness was served on draft in the 80s, each pub did their own bottling. Barrels of Guinness were shipped across the country to be poured, bottled, labelled, and stored for 28 days before service in each pub. Thomas Maher has a longstanding Guinness relationship and still offer small batch pours at the pub, most of which, according to the barkeep, is preferred at room temperature by local Guinness drinkers. 

Having made friends with a regular pub patron, neither of us quite noticed when the doors locked. “Every drunken pub conversation will end with a discussion of its turbulent history,” I read somewhere days after, and that is exactly what happened today. From small talk to travel talk, to beer talk and tasting, we covered a lot of ground with our new Irish friends. “Have you done the Copper Coast Drive?” he asked, “Tomorrow!” I couldn’t hide the excitement. “Oh, well, happy days then,” he commented.

An afternoon garden break 

With a new day comes a new adventure, and this is a short drive from the city, at Mount Congreve Gardens and Country Estate. Mount Congreve House, built in 1760, is home to six generations of the Congreve family. A project of Ambrose Congreve, the garden works began in the 1950s and were inspired by Exbury Gardens in Southampton (UK). Today, the Mount Congreve Gardens is the largest private collection of plants in the world, often described as the “Great Garden of the World”. The garden collection has plants from every continent, weaving through the property in intricate walking paths, occasionally mimicking a rainforest. The feel and scent of the gardens change seasonally with flowering plants making an annual membership worthy of serious consideration. 

The Stables Café at Mount Congreve Gardens is tucked away behind the gift shop with a sunny terrace looking out at the greenery. Open daily for breakfast and lunch The Stables is an award-winning cafe offering meals prepared with fresh, local produce (including some grown on the property) by Chef Jean-Baptiste (JB) Dubois. Seated by a round window, sun streaming through the webbed glass, our expectations were met and exceeded by the decadent Stables Quiche (with a side of a tomato basil soup) and the chicken and bacon sandwich served on a house-baked bun. 

Guests can now stay on the property at the self-catering Gate Lodge one of the other rental properties on the garden grounds.

Taking the slow route to Dungarvan

While there are many quaint towns and villages you can add to this road trip, one that fits perfectly is Dungarvan. Connected to Waterford by a scenic coastal route and Waterford Greenway the two cities are deeply interconnected.

Copper Coast Drive begins from a nearby town of Tramore and runs the 25km stretch to Dungarvan. If time permits, one could spend multiple days travelling along the coast, staying overnight in various small towns and spending slow afternoons at the beach. At the top of the route is a UNESCO Global Geopark where interactive displays and installations can provide context for the magnificent beauty about to unfold. 

Being a bit restricted on such luxuries we made a few strategic stops in search of that epic Irish scenery you see on Pinterest boards and travel brochures. A quick stop with a short walk around Tankardstown Engine House offered a preview of the view but it is the beach stops that really take your breath away. With ten beach and cove stops to choose from, decisions had to be made quickly. Accommodating brisk walks and mini hikes along the shore, taking a moment to soak in the smell of fresh salty water, we stopped at Ballydwan Beach, Stradbally Cove, and perhaps the most secluded of them all, Clonea Beach. The coast is shaped by undersea volcanoes and shifting deserts, carving caves in black rock and giving root to lush greenery, setting contrast to the deep blue water in the distance. Each stop has something unique to offer, be it a wide rocky beach or a picturesque viewpoint.

A leisurely stay in Dungarvan

On first glance, Dungarvan felt immediately smaller but as time past, the city showed us its many layers. For the night, we settled in at The Park Hotel, Leisure Centre & Holiday Homes, located on the outer perimeter of the city. Owned and operated by the Flynn family, Park Hotel is an elegant Georgian estate with a mix of hotel rooms and holiday rentals. On the property, guests have access to Meladon Bar & Brasserie (open quite late), The Garden Bar & Terrace, and Riverside Health Club, open to members and hotel residents. 

A short walk into the city centre revealed to us another selection of colourful pubs. With a few minutes to spare before dinner, my partner insisted on grabbing a pint of Guinness at Merrys Gastro Pub. Yet another cosy pub with beautiful decor, friendly service, and delicious food, this easily could have been the stop for the night.

360 Cookhouse, just across the street, is a popular fine dining and celebration destination. The restaurant has a homey atmosphere with family-friendly decor, mixed sitting areas, and an airy garden room out back. The menu is seasonal and accompanied by cask wine options (in addition to the standard bar selections). In no time our mains hit the table: Aged Prime Hereford Sirloin Steak and shrimp tomato pasta. Neatly plated, both dishes were flavourful and perfectly cooked, giving us just a teaser of Dungarvan flavours. 360 Cookhouse is also home to The Dungarvan Comedy Club, something we’ll have to experience on the next visit. 

This culinary corner of Dungarvan is only a couple of blocks away from the city centre. To the side of it is the Dungarvan Harbour, with its own set of establishments, a perfect spot to watch the sunset. In the main city square, locals split their budgets between Nagle’s Bar and The Local, both of which have spacious outdoor terraces. The walls in The Locals longbar are decorated edge to edge with old posters, Guinness advertisements, street signs, and other vintage memorabilia. The band take the booth by the bar, gathering friends and neighbours for a nightly performance. 

The energy changes significantly in the morning, especially on market days with vendors from across the county setting up shops in the square. Along the perimeter, people gather for coffee at X35 and Cass & Co., which fronts a large home and housewares shop. Tucked away on a narrow street is Dún Artisan Bakery, which by 11 AM was already feeling sparse on pastries. Croissant and Foccacia sandwich in hand, we took one last loop around Dungarvan, taking in its vibrant energy, knowing that the next time we visit, the city will be bigger and even more vibrant than it feels today. 

Getting to Waterford

The closest international airport is Dublin Airport (DUB). After that, renting a car is your best option to see the scenic Ireland. Driving the M9 highway from Dublin, you will cut through the island in about two hours, depending on the traffic. The M11 coastal route is more scenic and, without stops, can take about two-and-a-half hours. However, if you choose this route, consider making stops along the way in notable seaside villages and towns like Greystones, Wicklow, and Arklow. Extend this route by staying along the shore all the way to Wexford, and leave time to explore the shore.

Having met Jamie on multiple occasions at industry events, I knew she was also an avid traveller, working on building health and wellness into her fast-paced mobile lifestyle. In this cheerful conversation, we get a bit of an insight into Jamie’s background, talk about travelling for whisky, staying healthy on the road, and find out what her dessert dram is.

Kateryna Topol: Where have you been lately? Last I saw you were in Montréal…

Jamie Johnson: Yes, that was at the end of summer. I did a lot of Vancouver in the early part of the year, four times in a couple of months, and sometimes they were quite short trips. I’ve got Alberta and Scotland coming up, and Fredericton in November for the NB Spirits Festival.

KT: Fun, I might be seeing you in Fredericton

JJ: Come, it is so much fun! It’s like a camp, everyone stays in the same hotel, and you can see all your pals just mingling around; it’s always a good time.

KT: I’ve heard! Ok, let’s talk about personal travel, how do you approach that?

JJ: For me right now, especially because I’ve been travelling for eight years, I treat is staying home. So my travel now is whatever I can do in a road trip, that’s kind of a luxury for me at this point – not getting on a flight. But I think there are some places that I’m really interested in visiting, so I try to be strategic about visiting them. If I’m already in a place, let’s say the UK, I can add some extra vacation days onto the end of that, then I don’t have to do two trips all the way there. But I love a local road trip, like going to Montebello in Québec and doing a little spa weekend. I love going to Niagara and Prince Edward County and things that are sort of around here, but far enough away that it feels like a vacation, like a getaway.

KT: I often think how some of those places, two-three hours away, are close for us, while in Europe you’d be in a different country in that time

JJ: Isn’t it funny? As someone who travels a lot within Canada, it’s one of those things that doesn’t escape me, how big our country is. I have brand ambassador counterparts in different parts of the world who cannot get over the distances I have to travel to get to some of my major markets, like Vancouver or Victoria. I could probably spend 45 minutes extra on a plane and get to the UK.

And it is funny, though, because as much as we joke about how we stereotype Canadians all knowing each other, you will inevitably stumble upon somebody that’s like, “Oh, hey, do you know so and so from BC?” and you’re like, “I live in Toronto,” but very likely actually know that person [we both chuckled]. It’s neat because, especially within hospitality, and maybe within travel too, everybody kind of knows each other. So you do end up stumbling upon the same people over and over in different provinces. And it is a real treat to be able to have that kind of community.

KT: Yes, the travel community is very similar. Would you still visit distilleries on personal trips?

JJ: I love going to distilleries. I remember I had a couple of days off with another brand ambassador from the States, while in Scotland, we rented a car and visited other distilleries. I think part of being a brand ambassador is not just championing your own brand, but the category as a whole. People move around, it’s a very small community, so being able to go and say “Hi” to your friends at other distilleries is a really great thing. You can memorise all the facts about your own distillery from a book, sure, but if you’ve been around more distilleries, and if you gained knowledge of the context of the industry as a whole, you’re gonna have so much more to say and talk about when it comes to category. And even your own distillery, like where it fits in the history.

I started my whiskey club because I went to some distilleries in Kentucky in 2012, and that’s where my love of whiskey began. So I have a pretty extensive list of distilleries that I’ve checked off, and there are some great ones locally in Canada as well. I’m always up for a distillery visit.

KT: And for people who are not big drinkers, is there value in visiting a distillery?

JJ: I think there’s so much to learn that comes from not just the alcohol or the tasting portion of it. There’s a lot of history woven into what happened, how this distillery came about. Like was this always a legal distillery, or was this pre-legal times? We also talk about the building of the railroads in Speyside and the industrial revolution, and how that changed. And when you think about whiskey and the idea that it became popular because phylloxera wiped out a bunch of grapes, allowing whiskey to come into fashion.

There’s a ton of neat history there, and not only in the tall tales, but in the buildings themselves and a lot of the distilleries. Especially the oldies like The Balvenie, that building has basically been there since 1887, on the same ground as a medieval castle. There are so many tales behind it, and usually, you’ll find some great characters there, some beautiful architecture, some history, and just enjoy the whole context of it. Going to a super old pubby restaurant that serves fish and chips the same way they did back in the early 1900s, that’s always a fun thing to do.

KT: Very true, and a lot of them have such amazing views and architecture, often close to the water…

JJ: Yes, exactly. Plus, at The Balvenie, we’ve got all these beautiful ghost stories, it’s fun. If you like anything old and steeped in history, then any distillery will have that. And even the newer ones are quite the marvel architecturally. There’s always a story behind how these distilleries came about with their ethos. I’m fascinated even by the smells and just sort of the tactile nature of the distilleries – getting to smell the barley and smelling the fermenting mash, going into the still house and seeing all this really cool chemistry. And then you go into the warehouse and you’ve got this beautiful oaky smell from the angel share coming out. It’s very poetic.

KT: Absolutely! How about whisky festivals? There’s a perception that they are for people who are whiskey connoisseurs, but festivals are not just about drinking, Fèis Ìle, for example, is so much more

JJ: I agree with you 100%. I think whiskey festivals are especially great for people who are just getting into the category. It’s a ticket to an entire room full of different styles, and you can go around and discover a lot. And I always tell people, if you can spring for the VIP ticket, get in ahead of time and strategise without all the big crowds. Usually, during the VIP hour, there are fewer people, and you can actually talk to the brand ambassadors and get their insight into what’s going on at their table and if they have a recommendation of where you go from here. Sometimes we’ll have a special pour during the VIP, like a 21-year-old Glenfiddich. I’ve seen whiskey people come in and go straight for the smoky ones, and maybe that’s not the best strategy, because it kind of kills your palate a little bit to tasting anything that’s softer after.

My advice is to strategise before things get really crazy. And I always say quality over quantity. I’ve seen people fall in love with whiskey at festivals, ut’s a nice way to introduce someone to this category. And I remember someone saying to me, “If you don’t like whiskey, you just haven’t found yours yet”. Whiskey shows are a great way to dip your toes and see what style speaks to you best.

KT: … and to also learn that the most expensive doesn’t mean the best?

JJ: Yeah, most expensive usually means the oldest and the rarest. And the thing about that is if your palate does not love oak, or big, intense oak flavours, then no matter what, you’re not gonna like that 50-year-old whiskey. If you prefer something that’s a little lighter, brighter, the 12 might be your jam. Entry-level might be the one that you like the best, and perhaps a reason why Glenfiddich 12 is our best-selling whisky. I think the best one is the one that you like the best, not whoever somebody says is the best. So that could be a very young whiskey, that could be a very old whiskey. Some people love that really rich, oaky, sort of like intense flavour, and that’s great, but that’s not everybody’s taste.

KT: I recall you mentioning that you’ve been certified in distilling?

JJ: Yes, it’s a program they had with William Grant & Sons, where you would travel to the distillery, and it didn’t matter if you were a Cooper, a brand ambassador or whoever on the team, if you wanted to do your GCD, which is your general certification and distilling, you could join. You could go there, do the learning with the distillery staff, and then you would take the test a couple of months later in your own market. So I got to go to the distillery and learn the ways of distilling from all the really, all the unglamorous kind of stuff. Like, how do you clean a mash, what are the steps to making the bottles ready for bottling, and so on… It’s a really great tool I have in my pocket, and I’m grateful that I got to do it, it’s a great bonus to have that much insight into what the distillery does.

KT: Do you think it changed how you talk about whiskey and how you see whiskey?

JJ: Yeah, absolutely. Because you don’t think about the unglamorous stuff. You think about the cool liquid story, but there’s so much that goes on that we don’t see at the distillery that takes a lot of work and many talented people. It opens your eyes to how big these operations are. I’ve always thought about what next steps in the industry I’d love to take, and getting into processes is something that piqued my interest a little bit. It was really cool to see what options are available if you want to get into the actual process of making whiskey. So I loved it. If anyone is interested in doing that, it’s the IBD, which is the Institute for Brewing and Distilling. It’s available for anybody who wants to take it online.

KT: Back to the travel component of it all, how do you manage to stay physically active and maintaining wellness on the road?

JJ: It’s not easy. It’s definitely taken me a while to make it a priority and to figure out the best balance and how to keep close to my home regimen as best as I can. Giving myself grace is important too, because often when you’re on the road, your itinerary really isn’t your own. It’s built by who your host is, or whether or not you’ve got appointments and things like that.

But you know, I’m a Peloton girlie, so I try to find places that have a Peloton or I can still have space to use the app and do a treadmill workout or a stretch in my room. I think it doesn’t always have to be a full-on workout. I know some people are really good at finding yoga and spin classes, but I would say that’s trickier with my schedule, so mobile apps are super helpful.

For me, it’s also about nutrition. We get conditioned to think that travelling equals vacation, equals indulgence. And I think when you get more into travelling for work, you have to lose the mindset. Sometimes I find that I eat better on the road now than I do at home, because I’ve learned how to navigate a menu better, I learned my lesson.

I also have this thing, I call it “robe time,” where I kind of try my best to build my schedule with a little break between whatever I’m doing in the day and at night. So even if it’s an hour or two to go back to the hotel, decompress from the morning, have a breath, call home, and then do my evening activities, it really makes such a difference in that evening portion of it… I can gather my thoughts. Maybe I can go for a walk, maybe I have enough time for a 20-minute nap. Maybe I have enough time to shower and get re-ready, whatever it is.

KT: Robe time, I like it! Especially if you’re arriving early. I call it restarting the day – go to the hotel in the middle, shower, redo my makeup, redo my hair, and restart the day before evening activities.

JJ: Yes, exactly. I also try not to get too caught up in the time zone part of it. Canada is just huge, with a ton of time zones, so I try to manage how I’m going to tackle that time difference. If it’s a short trip, am I going to try my best to stay on Toronto time so that I don’t have a big swing? Or am I just going to commit to the new time zone and try my best to get on that time zone? Having a strategy helps a little bit, because it feels chaotic. I will say, though, sometimes I just have to say to myself, “You’re going to be really tired on this trip, and there’s nothing you can do about it, and that’s okay”. You can try to build some time when you get home to recover.

KT: Great point. Ok, to wrap things up, what are some of your favourite whiskies?

JJ: The one that changed everything for me, and honestly, this happened before I even started working on the brand, was The Balvenie Caribbean Cask 14. That was my very first single malt dram and a mind-blowing experience. I was way more into bourbons, focused on big, meaty, super high ABV bourbons, and I was trying to get into single malt. I actually said to Mark, “I really want to get into this category, but they’re a bit soft for me,” and he was like, “Well, why don’t you try The Balvenie Caribbean cask?”

And so I did. It was actually the very first bottle I ended up buying for myself after my first freelance gig. It scratched that sweet and spicy kind of thing for me, but it also showed me what complexity meant in single malts. And it wasn’t this huge, like flavour bomb, it was layers and layers of really beautifully balanced flavour. It changed the way I thought about single malts. It all kind of clicked for me then.

Then, two years later, I ended up being the brand ambassador for that brand. But it really and truly is my desert island dram. If someone said, “You need to disappear, you can only take one bottle with you,” I would honestly take the Caribbean cask.

The growing culinary scene, coupled with the city’s unique location and historic attractions, make the quaint yet vibrant town of Roanoke is quickly becoming a must-visit destination.

Located in Virginia’s Blue Ridge (VBR), Western Virginia, Roanoke is the largest city along the Appalachian Trail. The city is nestled in the Roanoke Valley, surrounded by thousands of miles of outdoor adventure, which makes it an ideal stop along the Shenandoah Valley road trip or before your visit to Mountain Lake Lodge (Dirty Dancing filming location).

What to see & Do in Roanoke

For many years, Roanoke was a refugee settlement city, so naturally, it is still very diverse with nearly a hundred languages spoken in schools. This diversity is reflected in the city’s attractions and architecture. In the heart of the downtown, for example, is Century Plaza, where intricately decorated columns represent Roanoke’s sister cities, showcasing the rich cultural connections the city established with the world.

In Downtown Roanoke, everything in Roanoke is 5-15 minutes away, so exploring the city on foot is one of the best ways to spend an afternoon. The architecture in the city is mostly low-rise and historic, with colourful brick and old-school signage. Along the way, you will come across family-owned and small designer shops, antique markets, and the Historic Roanoke City Market, one of the oldest continuously operating public markets in the United States. This walk can easily become an outdoor gallery experience if you choose to follow the Downtown Mural Project map. 

Downtown Roanoke is home to nine museums, quite a few of which are located inside the Center in the Square. Some of the museums are full-blown family attractions where you could easily spend hours (Science Museum of Western Virginia, The Don and Barbara Smith Children’s Museum and the two arcades: Pinball Museum and Roanoke STARcade). Others are cultural and educational facilities committed to the preservation of local and national history (Harrison Museum of African American Culture, Virginia Museum of Transportation, and Taubman Museum of Art, worth a stop just for the architecture). A lot of the city’s rapid growth can be attributed to its location on the Norfolk & Western Railway, and much of this history is shared in the O. Winston Link & Roanoke History Museum.

The biggest attraction in the city, quite literally, is the Mill Mountain Star, or the Roanoke Star. Built in 1949 by local merchants, it was originally a Christmas decoration that became a permanent attraction. The star is 88.5 feet tall, surrounded by lush greenery like an overcoat, overlooks the surrounding valley and mountains 1,045 feet above sea level. The Star is formed by 2,000 feet of neon tubing and was illuminated for the first time on November 23, 1949.

Where to eat & Drink in Roanoke 

For a smaller city, Roanoke packs a punch when it comes to culinary offerings. In addition to the wealth of homegrown chefs, the city has welcomed those looking for a quieter lifestyle, opening up new hot spots or taking over family legacies. The culinary community of Roanoke is collaborative, with chefs working with each other and nearby farmers, shining a spotlight on local seasonal ingredients and traditional recipes. 

Between the restaurants are craft cocktail bars focusing on interesting new techniques and the classics, each with its own unique vibe. And then there are, of course, a few breweries, most of which are destinations in their own right. Needless to say, this culinary scene is surprising, and one could easily spend an entire weekend in Roanoke eating and drinking their way through the downtown. 

The local breakfast and lunch favourites by far are Bread Craft and Scratch Biscuit Co.. Bread Craft is a traditional bakery with a French cafe influence serving coffee, baked goods, and fresh sandwiches. Scratch Biscuit Co., on the other hand, is where you come for a classic Southern meal to set you up for the day (think biscuits and gravy, egg and bacon sandwiches, and French toast).

A short drive from the city centre is Crystal Spring Grocery Co., as the name suggests, it’s a shop and a cafe. The shop was originally Tinnell’s Finer Foods, which was famous for pimento sandwiches. The ownership has changed, but Chef Matt Lintz kept the pimento on the menu using the original Tinnell’s recipe, to honour the tradition and not upset the neighbours. The market is connected to the Yard Bull Meats butchershop and is steps away from an award-winning restaurant, The River and Rail Restaurant. With an afternoon visit to the Roanoke Star to split up the eating, this corner of the city can easily take up your entire day.

Stock Bistro & Bar is one of the newest restaurants in Downtown Roanoke. Set at the back of the showroom at the Fire Station One Boutique Hotel, this modern restaurant has an open kitchen and a semi-private terrace. Led by Chef Jeff Farmer, the restaurant serves Nordic cuisine with a few regional classics. The menu is unique, to say the least, offering items like Svamptoast (mushroom parfait, wild chanterelles, pickled celery), duck and pork meatballs with lingonberry barbecue sauce, and of course, Virginia Oysters served with horseradish, mignonette, and fried saltines. The Stock beverage program is a strong match to their food menu with a robust listing of speciality and classic cocktails, local spirits and beers, and a deep wine list.

The Vault at The Liberty Trust Hotel is another upscale dining destination. The building, which dates back to 1910, was originally First National Bank and was considered “A Temple of Finance”. Today, it is a four-star hotel and restaurant. The original high sealings, marble columns and door trims, and the metal furnishings are eye-catching from first glance. At the back of a bar is an open vault, used as a dining room, the heavy door of which naturally draws plenty of attention. Sidecar also has an impressive food menu, from oysters to Bavarian pretzel (with mustard and beer cheese), and Empanada Criolla (with house chorizo), but among locals, this was the top recommendation for cocktails, rivalling only Lucky. Sidecar is a busy spot with loud music, energetic patrons and an old-world spirits and cocktail menu. Between classic and house features, some cocktails come with a bit of a show, torch-fired table-side. Lucky’s, on the other hand, is a smaller spot serving comfort food and craft cocktails. It’s the bar other bartenders go to, and even if you only come for the drinks, the fresh daily menu will likely inspire an appetite.

For more casual meals, consider Cedar’s Lebanese, Jack Brown’s Beer & Burger Joint, Fortunato, and Three Notch’d Brewing Company. Texas Tavern and Martin’s Downtown are also fun options for an easy meal or a quick snack. Martin’s is also where you go for live music and late-night shenanigans with the locals. 

Blindhouse Beer Company, Roanoke, Virginia.

Roanoke has quite a few breweries, and three of them are located within spitting distance from one another. Golden Cactus Brewing and Blindhouse Beer Company are nearly next door, while Big Lick Brewing Company sits across the street, framed by its large patio. Golden Cactus is a large, open warehouse space that turns into a market once a week. The brewery has a very fun and welcoming decor with a row of classic arcade games lined up against the back wall. Their beer selection is similarly cheeky and often seasonally available for a limited time.

Blindhouse Beer Company is a smaller spot, with a few reclaimed couches and tables in the tap room, garage door open to let in the sun, and only a handful of tables by the bar. Described by casual bar patrons as the “fancier place where you get beer in stemmed glasses,” Blindhouse’s only fancy is their beer serve: cold, crisp, with a trophy-worthy foam head.

Where to stay in Roanoke, Virginia

The city’s newest boutique hotel is a beautiful historic property, Fire Station One Boutique Hotel. The building is an old fire station, refurbished to house only a few rooms, each one is unique. The main floor of the building is shared between a furniture and home decor showroom and Stock Restaurant & Bistro. The shared space also includes a large event room with multiple sitting areas and original firehouse cabinets. Read the full review here. 

The Liberty Trust Hotel is another classic with rich history and one-of-a-kind decor from window trims to lighting fixtures. The rooms are King and Queen suites with a lovely view of the city. On the ground floor is one of the city’s favourite restaurants, The Vault. 

One of the city’s oldest and most notable hotels is The Hotel Roanoke (Curio Collection by Hilton). The property has an old castle feel, full amenities including pool, spa, gym, and multiple restaurants. Connected to the city by an enclosed pedestrian bridge, this is the biggest hotel in Roanoke.

Make it a road trip or a hiking adventure 

Aside from adding Roanoke to your Shenandoah Valley road trip or Mountain Lake Lodge visit, there are many other single and multi-day road trip and hiking alternatives nearby. 

Roaring Run is a great option for an easy morning hike. The trail is 1.2 miles round trip and leads to a cascading waterfall. It’s an easy and beautiful nature walk open 24/7. AllTrails directions, and here are a few other nearby hiking trails.

The Roanoke Appalachian Trail is perhaps one of the most scenic hiking trails in the world and has a few access points from the Roanoke Valley. The trail is about 2,200 miles with many breathtaking viewpoints, including Mount Katahdin as the northern trailhead and Springer Mountain South. 

Blue Ridge Parkway is the larger area surrounding the city. The parkway includes 240+ miles of the Appalachian Trail, 260+ miles of blueways, and 700+ miles of trails for hiking. Along the way, you will come across ancient caverns, Virginia’s natural gravitational anomaly, Mystery Hill, Charlottesville and the Albemarle County wine region, and many other points of interest. Virginia’s Blue Ridge Cheers Trail is a version of the above trail but focused specifically on local breweries and distilleries. Break this itinerary up into a few daytrips or a single looping road trip. Find the full itinerary here.

Roaring Run Trail, 45 minutes away from Downtown Roanoke, Virginia.

Getting to & Around Roanoke 

Downtown Roanoke is very walkable, and most things are within a 5-15 minute distance. There are also two old school trolley routes operating in the city connecting the Downtown to the Crystal Spring Neigbourhood, if you are interested in visiting Crystal Spring Grocery Co. and nearby restaurants. Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport (ROA) is the local airport with routes connecting Roanoke to most major cities in the US. Roanoke is also a stop on Amtrak’s Northeast Regional route. If driving, the city is accessible from Interstate 81 and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

What now looks like a sunny gazibo used to be a boat house launching boats into the Mountain Lake.

Located in Pembroke, Virginia (USA), Mountain Lake Lodge is nestled in the Appalachian Mountains, encompassing a lake and miles of untouched forestry. The Lodge is one of the two filming locations* for Dirty Dancing, arguably one of the greatest romantic movies of all time. For 36 years, people have been travelling from around the world for an immersive Dirty Dancing experience, prepared to play dress up with their friends and family in the Kellerman’s Mountain House. Naturally, these all-inclusive themed weekends sell out quickly and often carry a year-long waitlist. But there is more to Mountain Lake Lodge than movie memorabilia (though you can buy plenty of it at the Kellerman’s gift shop). From the scenic location and unique history to the disappearing lake and even a few ghost stories, the Lodge is a destination in its own right.

The world beyond Kellerman’s

Arriving early Friday afternoon, the  Lodge was already swarming with outfitted Dirty Dancing fans, but with a short walk to the Nature Centre, the buzz simmered to a quiet. Passed the wilderness attire racks and Saskwatch magnets, I found my gator guide, Cameron Duke, prepared for a history lesson, however it might look. For the next hour, securely strapped in a John Deere XUV (aka the Gator), we looped over the mountain and across the lake floor, pausing to take in the sights.

These historic property tours are a year-round offering and a great way to see the mountain top.

Expertly manoeuvring across the thick greenery, Cameron shared the long and fascinating history of the property, pointing out Dirty Dancing filming locations and behind-the-scenes stories. On the other side of the new-ish outdoor pool and the original Baby’s cabin (Virginia Cottage), a tilted metal sign greeted us ahead of the sandy path: “Keep out of the pond. No swimming, no fishing, no boating”. There hasn’t been water in the lake for over a decade. “Many studies have been done over the years about why the lake empties and refills on its own schedule, but we still really don’t understand this behaviour,” Cameron shared, pointing out the faded remnants of the shoreline. In the distance, you can see a carcass of a boat stranded in the bushes. “One of the property rules is to leave nature as it is, so since the water drained, we have not been able to move that boat,” he commented. As we paused at the bottom of the lake, contemplating its mysteries, I fell in love with the view and the wonder of it all.

The rocky edge is where the Mountain Lake used to meet the shore. It has been dry for over a decade. Mary Moody’s Endowment rules prevent intervention with nature, which has completely overtaken the lake floor, creating a beautiful field of wildflowers and bird-seeded trees.

“With so much history, are there any ghost stories at the resort?” I wandered out loud. “I personally haven’t had any encounters, but have heard stories about the original cottages from the housekeepers. Are you into paranormal?” he asked. “I’m a fan of the X-Files,” I admitted, and we both chuckled. “Well, we are in the Appalachians, so there are plenty of supernatural stories here,” Cameron added, mentally taking me back to the Saskwatch magnets. Later that night, I spent more time than I care to admit reading about “weird Virginia” on Reddit.

The immersive Dirty Dancing experience 

“We tried to separate ourselves from the film,” Mountain Lake Lodge President and CEO, Heidi Stone, admitted, “but quickly realised Dirty Dancing fans were the biggest visitor base for the resort. So we leaned in”.

On arrival, all guests are handed a pink badge detailing the weekend activities. Couples, family and friend groups move through the resort in excited clusters dressed as their favourite characters, re-enacting scenes and posing for photos. Fuzzy blue cardigans, striped t-shirts, capris, and hundreds of white Keds are the weekend uniform. Completed with watermelon-shaped purses and an occasional curly wig, the women are often accompanied by their own Johnnies, dressed in all black.

Navigating the halls and nature trails to the sounds of Eric Carmen’s “Hungry Eyes,” I kept overhearing guests discussing their favourite movie scenes and searching for insider knowledge from the staff. Having seen the movie at a young age (and many times since), I feel like I found my people, deeply connected with the cult-classic storyline.

“Is this where it happened?” I overhear a woman at breakfast. “Yes,” the host gestures at the table, referring to the scene in which Baby pours a pitcher of water on Robbie. “Well, actually, it was between these two tables,” she adds. The woman shrieks with excitement, easing into her seat, eyes locked on the plaque with the scene title. Multiple plaques are scattered throughout the property calling attention to filming locations – here is where they did the lift, and here Baby had a stern conversation with her father. The filming location spots add up to the Saturday afternoon scavenger hunt, just after trivia and before the picnic lunch in Mary’s Barn.

“The only thing I want to win this weekend is trivia,” a woman next to me at the bar shares. “I tell you, heads will roll,” she laughed. With two opportunities to see Dirty Dancing once again, trivia was perhaps the most competitive component of this weekend.

The official competition, however, is the Friday night Costume Contest. One group at a time, guests voted on the best Baby, best Johnnie, and best supporting cast. Each participant had an opportunity to showcase their character by performing a dance, reading a line, or sharing another relevant talent, often causing a wave of laughter across Mary’s Barn. 

Each evening, guests gathered for dinner at Harvest Restaurant, accompanied by a live band playing music from the film. The dinner buffet is a selection of hearty farm-to-table meals like fresh biscuits and gravy, juicy roasts, hearty pastas, and rich soups. And after dinner, there is always a dance party running well into the wee hours. By day two, having attended dance lessons, the dancefloor is in a synchronised routine, filling the room with unadulterated joy and laughter.

The original family resort

The history of Mountain Lake Lodge is nearly two centuries deep and explains some of the oddities of the property and its unique character. The original resort, Salt Pond, dates back to 1851, when it was a popular destination for stagecoach travellers. A decade later, the Porterfield family purchased the property from General Herman Haupt and turned it into a vibrant family destination.

Back then, summer vacations could last two to three months (much like in the movie). Wealthy families bought into the resort by building custom cottages, which they owned outright for 15 years. One of the resort regulars was William Lewis Moody, a wealthy man from Texas who spent every summer at Mountain Lake Lodge. When the time came for him to give up his cottage, “he did what any wealthy man would do, and purchased the property,” Cameron shared. 

Mr Moody was a wealthy man but notably careful with his money. To avoid construction expenses during the main lodge upgrades, he used, nearly exclusively, resources available on his land, using rock from the mountain. Unintentionally sustainable and meant to withstand weather and fires, the stone lodge he built in the 1930s is the lodge we see today.

Mr Moody’s daughter, Mary Moody, was equally fond of the property and purchased it after her father’s passing, becoming one of the first female CEOs of the time. To ensure future generations can experience what she has as a child, Mary created a set of rules: the resort can never be sold, there are no TVs in the rooms, no logging, and no hunting on the property, and generally speaking, nature’s choice always comes first. A series of narrow driving routes and hiking paths curve throughout the property, but much of the land is overtaken by nature, with wild flowers flourishing at the bottom of the dried-up lake.

Before Mary passed, she established the Mary Moody Northen Endowment, which operates Mountain Lake Lodge as a non-profit, called Mountain Lake Conservancy, protecting the 2,600-acre nature preserve surrounding the resort. “Without Mary, we would be a roadside sign,” Cameron noted. Mary’s portrait hangs in the Lodge lobby, looking over hotel guests and staff with a scrupulous eye. “One time they tried to move the portrait, but things started to go wrong just, everywhere. So they quickly put it back, and now when anything goes wrong, the staff checks on Mary’s portrait”.

The Endowment briefly considered closing the resort due to disrepair, but instead chose an extensive, seven-year renovation to renew and save the Lodge. Facilities have been upgraded and the guest experience improved with the addition of adventure and nature activities. Today, the Lodge is a thriving, award-winning** lodging destination. So no matter how many years pass, you will always be able to visit the resort where Dirty Dancing was filmed.

Year-round vacation destination

Mountain Lake Lodge is a full-service resort embedded into wilderness. Guests can find the ultimate comfort of a private cabin or cosy up in the main lodge suite. Some rooms have fireplaces, some have lake views, and some are located in the privacy of the forest canopy. 

Harvest Restaurant is the main dining stop offering flavours of Southwest Virginia prepared with fresh, local ingredients. The casual Stony Creek Tavern and Salt Pond Pub terrace are also popular spots among locals who find rest by the fire after a hike or a bike ride up the mountain. After dark, the hillside is minimally illuminated by the fire with string lights framing the terrace. And if you look up on a clear night, you just might see the Milky Way cutting through the navy sky. 

At the centre of the resort is an outdoor pool, one of the newer additions to the heritage property. In addition to the self-guided trails and activities at the Nature Center, the lodge offers hosted excursions, guided history tours and hikes to the Cascade Falls, archery tag games, bubble ball, and other hosted family-friendly activities. As of 2024, Mountain Lake Lodge is also home to the new Giles County Trail Center, connecting visitors, hikers, and the community to 20 miles of Virginia’s trails. 

The Adventure Center is open between mid-April and mid-October, weather permitting.

Hongdae

Located in Mapo District, Hongdae is home to Hongik University. You can expect many students and a younger vibe in this area. Because it is a student neighbourhood, you can find a lot of cute coffee shops, cafes, and restaurants at an affordable price. There are also many shopping stores here, the best is all the little shops in the alleyways. There is a lot of entertainment in Hongdae so you will find dancers and singers busking on the street.

If this is your first time in Hongdae, don’t be afraid to walk around and explore. There’s a lot to see, do, and eat! It’s always very crowded, especially at night because of the rich nightlife. Hongdae was my favourite neighbourhood to frequent as an early to mid-twenty-year-old. I loved meeting my friends here for brunch and shopping. On the weekends, we would have dinner and stay out for drinks and noraebang (노래방, or karaoke).

Don’t get me wrong, though! Hongdae is fun for all ages and groups if you’re into cute coffee shops and boutiques. There are various things to do here, and it is great for family fun! The streets are colourful and full of creativity. The Seoul subway or bus is the most affordable and convenient way to get to this neighbourhood. 

Hot tip: Take Exit 9 at Hongik University station to get to all the stores at a closer distance.

Recommendations in Hongdae:

• Get an awesome value of all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ at Hongdae Korean BBQ All You Can Eat Pig Company
• If you want to try a variety of meats, try Saemaeul Sikdang, this chain has locations in other areas.
• Hongdae Shopping Street will grab your attention from left and right! Check out some local shops and stalls here.

Itaewon

From my experience, I think Itaewon is one of the best neighbourhoods for authentic non-Korean food. While you can find many different types of international cuisine in other neighbourhoods, you can expect to see at least one restaurant that serves foreign cuisine in Itaewon. Itaewon is located in the Yongsan District, which is also a residential neighbourhood. From local handcrafted boutiques to American breakfast, Vietnamese lunch, and Middle Eastern desserts, you’ll find something delightful here!

Have you heard of the Korean Netflix drama Itaewon Class? This drama was actually set in the neighbourhood of Itaewon! You can watch the drama to get a glimpse of what it’s like to be in Itaewon on Netflix. The show follows an ex-con trying to open up a successful bar in Itaewon. You’ll follow him to see obstacles of rivalry and romance, as well as some of the places where the scenes were filmed.

Recommendations in Itaewon:

• Take a walk at Noksapyeong Bridge to get the perfect view for a photo opportunity of the Namsan Seoul Tower
• The best 100% vegan food in all of Seoul (dare I say…) is Plant Café. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Make sure to try their cakes!

Sinsa

Remember in 2012 when PSY’s Korean song “Gangnam Style” became a viral sensation across the internet? Gangnam is a real place, and one of my favourite neighbourhoods is in it. This district he was raving about is full of style, luxury brands, and wealthy people. You will find celebrities living in Gangnam, definitely those who have influence.

Let’s zoom into Sinsa! I had frequented this neighbourhood so many times because of the countless excellent cafes and restaurants they had that were a must-try for me. If you’re into skincare, there are plenty of cosmetic clinics here.

Recommended places in Sinsa and the rest of Gangnam:

• Garosu-gil is terrific for all the local boutiques and international high-end shops. It’s a nice, long street with blocks of clothes, accessories, shoes, and cute stationery items. 
• I remember my first time trying authentic, traditional Mexican food from El Pino323, owned by a Korean adoptee. The original location was in Itaewon, but it moved to Gangnam in 2022. It was always packed, but it always had happy vibes.
• This Korean sunglasses store called Gentle Monster Flagship Store Sinsa not only sells one of the trendiest eyewear in the fashion industry globally, but it is an art exhibition in itself. The art installations they create are out of this world, so I highly recommend stopping by.

Myeongdong

If you heard of Myeongdong, you might have heard mixed reviews about it. Every neighbourhood has its pros and cons, but the pros outweigh the cons here. Myeongdong is an excellent area to shop in. You can get all of your shopping and souvenirs done here. While some might say things are overpriced and touristy compared to other places, it is still very convenient to shop and eat here. You get rows and corners of local and international brands here. There is street food with trending snacks that you see in your favourite Korean drama or foodie YouTuber.

Recommendations in Myeongdong:

• Skincare products are a must-get! Whatever Korean brand your favourite Korean celebrity is using, you can find a store that sells it here. What’s great is that there will almost always be some kind of sale or freebie with a purchase.
• Whenever I flew back to the US to visit my family, my parents always asked me to bring back Korean ginseng. I’d never heard of Korean ginseng, particularly the brand “Jung Kwan Jang” (정관장), nor knew how special they were. I have come to find that they have great health benefits and improve overall health. This would make a fantastic gift for older family members and friends. You can find this brand in Myeongdong and at the Namdaemun Market. You can try to haggle for cheaper, especially if you are paying in cash (Beware: I’ve heard that third-party sellers could be selling fake ginseng). Depending on the quantity, Asian ginseng can cost up to hundreds of dollars. 

Hot tip: You can find Jung Kwan Jang Korean Ginseng at the duty-free shop at the Incheon International Airport and get a tax refund.

Insadong

Insadong is located in the Jongno district. This district is full of history dating back to the 14th century. In the neighbourhood of Insadong, you can expand your mind and witness traditional Korean art and history with your eyes. This area has a mix of modernism as the younger generation contributes to the art scene. On the rooftop, there is a quirky and fun cafe with toilet-shaped mugs that they use to serve your drink. It gives off a silly yet friendly atmosphere.

I love, love, love cultural art! Along with traditional crafts such as the Korean name stamp (dojang; 도장), which you can customize in select shops, and handheld fans (buchae; 부채), the younger generation is also selling handmade stationery items that match their own art style.

Insadong is a must-go whenever I have friends visiting from outside of Korea and want to explore the traditional and historic parts of South Korea in Seoul.

Recommendations in Insadong:

• Insadong Culture Street is a street of stalls with local and handmade artisan products.
• Imagine transporting back even more so by renting traditional Korean wear and walking around the Gyeongbokgung Palace,
• Ensure you not only get a glimpse of the old Hanok buildings but also walk through them at Ikseon-dong Hanok Village. You will feel like you’ve been transported back to the Joseon dynasty in the 14th century!

Bonus: Ilsan, Goyang

Ilsan is a suburban area on the outskirts of Seoul. Don’t worry; it is so close to Seoul that it is on the Seoul subway system map. Depending on which neighbourhood you depart from the subway will take 30 to 45 minutes. That’s about the same time as travelling to other neighbourhoods within Seoul.

When I first moved to South Korea, Goyang City is where I lived, and it was perfect for me. It is similar to Seoul, except it is less crowded. There were just about the right noises and activities of a city and the space of the suburbs that I needed and enjoyed.

You can definitely take a day or two-day trip to Ilsan and experience what life is like there. The first place that immediately comes to mind in this neighbourhood is Ilsan Lake Park. It’s a must-visit. This lake park has a special place in my heart because it comforted me whenever I needed a breather from work and life. Evening walks here were my favourite.

Recommendations for Ilsan:

My favourite brunch spot, which brings back memories, is Peach Springs. It was difficult to make time to go there with friends because they were always so booked and busy. Then, finally, one rushed Sunday morning, I was able to get in. It also happened to be with my boyfriend at the time, who is now my husband. The American-style restaurant is in a quiet residential area. I highly recommend wandering around it as many cute coffee and dessert shops exist. This area is a hidden gem.

What to see & Do in Rochester

A lot of your time can be easily spent exploring Rochester on foot or by bike. Walking around, you will come across a wide range of architectural influences and remnants of the industrial era. Many of these factories have been repurposed into restaurants, distilleries, and cultural centres. 

One of the city’s newest neighbourhoods, the Neighborhood of Play, located around the infamous Strong National Museum of Play, for example, was a road used by Kodak factory workers. Today, it is a vibrant community tastefully inspired by the gleefulness of The Strong Museum. The museum is a year-round cultural attraction, housing the world’s largest collection of toys (from video games to, well, the stick). Make sure to cut through Sesame Street to the Butterfly Garden.

Strong Museum of Play annual pass holders often treat the museum as their local arcade centre. 

The Memorial Art Gallery is located near the Neighborhood of the Arts (NOTA), a good area to stroll through to see some public art. The Memorial Art Gallery spreads across two floors and contains a range of wonderful pieces from the permanent collection and touring exhibitions. The gallery building is enclosed by 10 acres of public gardens with sculptural pieces of various sizes spread around the park. The first sculptures you will likely notice, however, are the cute, round-faced characters by Tom Otterness.

Further into the city is the world’s oldest photography museum: George Eastman. Founded in 1947 by the creator of the Kodak camera, the first ever consumer-friendly point-and-shoot camera, it is the hub for all things photography and film. The museum was originally Eastman’s home, and parts of it still very much look like it. The Eastman Menison also has spectacular gardens.

The museum collection includes over 400,000 photographs from 14,000 photographers dating from the beginnings of the medium.  On the left are a few pieces from the museum collection chosen to demonstrate connections between photography, cinema, technology, and culture. On the right are images by Annie Wang, Taipei photographer who took an annual photos with her son for 17 years.

The colourful mini jars are powdered synthetic dye collected by the Technicolor Motion Picture Corporation 1929–1975.

One of the newer cultural additions to the city is ArtisanWorks. The building is a 40,000-square-foot renovated factory that operates as a self-funded, not-for-profit art space. This art collection includes new works by student artists, current contemporary talent, vintage pieces, and memorabilia, rounding up to nearly 500,000 pieces.

A short drive from the city centre will take you to the Record Archive, a massive retail shop and music venue. Time permitting you could spend hours here flipping through vinyl and other music memorabilia, concluding your evening with a live performance in the back room. Much like the rest of the space, this room’s interior design is composed of repurposed furnishings and has a very casual living room feel.

For those looking for more family-friendly activities RMSC Museum & Science Center has three floors of interactive science and history-themed exhibits. On the property is also the Strasenburgh Planetarium and 12 miles of forest trails at the Cumming Nature Center. The planetarium occasionally hosts adult dance parties.

Among other free activities in the ROC is, of course, a visit to High Falls, one of the Genesee River waterfalls you can see from Genesee Brew House. A walk across the Pont de Rennes pedestrian bridge, however, will offer a broader view of this 96-foot-tall natural wonder. Lastly, Rochester Public Market and the surrounding district are home to local produce and craft vendors and quite a few other local businesses, including bars, bakeries, and juiceries. 

Rochester bars & Restaurants 

Rochester is a great spot for foodies. Chef Ryan Simpson, from Good Luck restaurant, described the city as “diverse, eclectic, seasonal, casual, communal,” and those words are fully reflective of the city’s food scene. Depending on the length of your visit, you can spend each day restaurant and bar hopping, one neigbourhood at a time, which is how we will approach this Rochester food and beverage guide portion. If your time is limited, short Uber rides will take you anywhere, any time. 

A popular one-stop destination is Radio Social, a large playground with a great bar and dining area leading into a bowling alley and games room. With a terrace, spacious bar, 34 bowling lanes, and plenty of other activities (like shuffleboard and darts) this place is an absolute vibe.

Deeper into the neigbourhood, you will find Jack’s Extra Fancy, a divey Irish bar/restaurant that many locals pointed us to for cocktails. Crossing Blossom Street past Living Roots Co. and Black Button Distilling (more on those later), we head to Park Ave. With old homes converted into restaurants, patios spilling out onto the street lit by twinkly lights, this charming street really comes to life at night. The four restaurants on the street – Leonore’s, Vern’s, Roux, and Dorado – are operated by the same group, serving up different cuisines in uniquely different atmospheres. 

Leonore’s cellar decor is reminiscent of a cave decorated with sharp twine, all of which works in a very cool way. 

Ziggy’s in the market became an instant favourite. The casual atmosphere, talented and friendly bar team, and delicious food drew us back here multiple evenings over the weekend. The cocktail menu is robust with classic, original, and tiki selections to choose from. The bar regulars seemingly gravitate to Genessee beer, which pairs well with bar snacks like chicken wings and the juicy cheeseburger served with tator tots. The two nearby recommendations are Velvet Belly, for seafood and fun cocktails, and Cure, for steak and fries, vibes, and drinks. 

Restaurant Good Luck is tucked away on a residential street not far from the George Eastman Museum. The space is dark and eccentric with exposed brick, copper finishes, and other reprupsoed industrial decor. At the back is a trophy shelf showcasing various bartending competition wins. The rotating seasonal menu is a lineup of world-inspired dishes like Sicilian pizza, red lentil curry, and lamb tagine. A block down you will find Melo Coffee & Kitchen, recommended for a hearty lunch and, of course, coffee. 

Locals Only is another popular spot for breakfast, lunch, or brunch; mimosas optional. While in the area, pop into Ugly Duck Coffee for some of the best coffee in Rochester. In the evening, the place to be in this area is Aqua Vitae, a moody cocktail bar with an impressive backbar selection.

Certain seasonal events will take you Downtown, where a new food court concept is taking shape, Mercantile on Main. Inside is La Bola, a restaurant and bar cooking up dishes with Spanish and Mediterranean influences. In addition to interesting world wines La Bola also has a great selection of speciality cocktails and rotating sangrias. Make sure to leave room for a dessert.

Breweries, distilleries & An urban winery

Pre-prohibition Rochester had around 50 breweries, but naturally, the liquor regulations took their toll on these businesses. Today, with many of the breweries located within the city core, the brewing history is not lost on Rochester. There are currently eight breweries with the two most talked about being Genesee Brew House and Strangebird Brewing.

Genesee Brew House is the oldest brewery in New York State and one of the largest and oldest continually operating breweries in America. The red brick building overlooking the High Falls is a bar, restaurant, and shop. The Genesee roots run deep through the city’s bars where vintage posters are hung up on the walls. It’s a go-to order for menu locals who ask the barkeep for a Genny (pronounced “Jenny”) as soon as their bottom hits the seat. Make sure to try the Bavarian Pretzel with beer cheese dip. 

Strangebird Brewing is a much newer outpost set in the old mechanic and grocery shop. Strangebird was a popular name in conversations with many local,s regarding it as the best brewery and pizza in the city. On a late weekend afternoon, both the terrace and interior were busy with folks patiently waiting to order their artisanal pints and made-from-scratch food at the counter. And the pizza was delicious.

For those looking for something a little stronger, there are a few local distilleries, like Iron Smoke, where artisanal straight bourbon is made. The more historic stop is Black Button Distilling, Rochester’s first grain-to-glass distillery since prohibition. The business was originally located near the public market but outgrew the space, recently relocating to a bigger space with factory windows welcoming the afternoon sun into the tasting room. Black Button repertoire includes bourbon, gin, vodka, and whiskey, using locally sourced ingredients and sustainable practices.

Diagonally across the street is perhaps Rochester’s most unique beverage experience, Living Roots Wine & Co. This building used to be a stamp factory and today serves as an urban winery and tasting room. Founded by Sebastian and Colleen Hardy, who leaned into their six generations of wine-making history. The company has three outposts: the Rochester tasting room, a vineyard in the Finger Lakes, and a vineyard in Australia. The two vineyards create an interesting dichotomy for wine production (hot and dry climate versus cold and wet).

Some of the processed grapes travel in refrigerated containers from Australia to Upstate New York, and that’s just one of the many innovative techniques “Seb”, the winemaker, uses. “He’s crazy, but in a good way,” our host chuckled, talking about the red resilsing in my tasting flight (yes, you read that correctly). The Living Roots menu includes four tasting flights appealing to different kinds of wine drinkers. My choice for the afternoon, for example, was Off the Beaten Path, inclusive of Session Gold (inspired and, in a sense, made like an IPA), two types of Pet-Nat, and the red Resilsing, aka Rizza. 

The colour in Rizza is achieved by fermenting the 100% Riesling grape juice on Cabernet Franc skins. 

The marinated sheep and goat cheese seen above also comes from Australia. The cheese is so decadent and delicious, I too would like to order it by the barrel. 

Year-round events in Rochester 

Residents of Rochester love to go out, and this reflects in the city’s 140 festivals taking place throughout the year. From the annual Casino Night (May) to the Indie Comics Expo (April) and an actual Sheep Shearing Festival (April), just in spring, there is a lot to choose from. While you can plan your entire Rochester itinerary around eating and drinking, adding an occasional event is a great way to break up this vacation. 

Rochester Fringe Festival (September) was recently named “one of the country’s most prominent multidisciplinary events” by the New York Times, and the variety the event offers certainly supports this statement. The fringe grounds are set up Downtown with full amenities, an outdoor movie theatre, outdoor games, and multiple bars. Last year, the unearthly attraction was Alan Parkinson DAEDALUM – Architects of Air. This immersive blowup structure involved multiple tunnels and sensory experiences, bringing the audience into the art itself. 

Cirque du Fringe: Varieté!, on the other hand, is the classic comedic circus by Las Vegas legends Matt and Heidi Morgan. For this addition, the audience was treated to Argentinian gauchos, trapeze, and a hair hang aerialist, among other performances. Hair hang aerialist performance was certainly jaw-dropping – do not try this at home, kids. The nightly performances also included music showcases, comedy, and theatre but for many, the favourite was Shotspeare, a hilarious take on Shakespeare by a local comedy troupe. Much like the original Shakespeare performances, this showcase was engaging, interactive, and different from night to night.

The DAEDALUM structure feels alive, breathing, and moving around you, following the pace of the people slowly moving through it in amazement. 

The George Eastman Museum also plays a crucial role in the preservation and promotion of film and film history. So naturally, the ROC holds a few film festivals throughout the year, including the Rochester International Film Festival (May), The ImageOut Film & Video Festival (April), The JCC Ames Amzalak Rochester Jewish Film Festival (July), and The Polish Film Festival (fall, TBA).

In May, Rochester’s Highland Park is overcome by visitors for the Annual Lilac Festival (May) to witness, and surely photograph, 1,800 lilac bushes. The festival runs for a week and includes live entertainment, meetups, a farmers market, a parade, and other events. The music theme continues in the Rochester International Jazz Festival (June), a nine-day event bringing to the stage over 1,500 artists. The vinyl collectors will also enjoy the Rochester Record Fair (April), taking place at the Radio Social. 

LGBTQ+ celebrations and community spaces are prevalent in the city year-round, but the main celebration is July Pride. The festivities begin with a Pride Picnic and culminate with the Pride Festival and Pride Parade.

With all that cocktail culture, it is no surprise that the city also hosts a few spirit-forward events. Rochester Cocktail Revival (RCR) is returning for its 12th year in June. Over the course of a week, the festival welcomes bartenders and spirits experts for a series of events, including bar pop-ups, pairing dinners, parties, tastings events, educational seminars, and other celebrations. Rochester Tiki Week (August) is a lesser-known festivity but is top of mind for the local and neighbouring bar community. 

Where to stay in Rochester 

Hampton Inn & Suites Rochester Downtown is the newest hotel in the city located in the new Neigbourhood of Play. The hotel is inspired by the Strong Museum, with colourful decor and abstract art. The Strathallan Rochester Hotel & Spa is situated on the other side of town, close to the Memorial Art Gallery and the Eastman Museum. Another full-service property with great dining options, including a rooftop terrace with a great city view. For a more intimate feel Inn on Broadway will offer a boutique experience and unique vintage decor. 

Further out of the city, but within a short driving distance, is the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa. This is a stunning remote resort with a full-service spa and a 9-hole golf course.

Getting to & around Rochester

Rochester is located in Upstate New York, almost directly opposite Toronto across Lake Ontario. Getting here can be quite easy. The drive from Toronto (around the lake) is 3 to 4 hours, depending on the traffic. The drive from New York City is about 6 hours and cuts through the state and the Finger Lakes on the way in. You could easily add a few days in the Upstate Wine Country to this trip.

For the two closest major cities, train is also an option: a bit over 5 hours from Toronto with VIA Rail and about 7 hours from New York with Amtrak. Flying, however, might be a much easier option for visitors in the US. Delta, United, and JetBlue offer direct flights from NYC, American has direct flights from Boston and Southwest from Orlando.

The city is not particularly large and is quite walkable. Your days and evenings can be planned to explore various neighbourhoods on foot, or you can hop across town in an Uber with ease.
