Minutes north of Victoria, British Columbia, where misty Pacific air mingles with earthy, cedar forest scents, one of Canada’s most celebrated distilleries continues to craft award-winning spirits. In 2016, Scottish-born entrepreneur Dr. Graeme Macaloney launched an ambitious project, determined to prove that world-class single malt whisky could not only be produced but thrive far beyond Scotland’s storied glens. Today, Macaloney’s Island Distillery & Twa Dogs Brewery has become one of Canada’s most decorated craft whisky producers, a triumph of vision and craft.

The origins of Macaloney’s Island Distillery: Scottish inspiration meets Canadian terroir

Years ago, Graeme Macaloney was quietly laying the seeds of his future success with a humble summer job bottling the “water of life”, which fueled his lifelong fascination with whisky. Years later, his passion, combined with credibility and expertise, helped those seeds bloom into a legitimate business. Joining the team were veteran Scottish master distiller Mike Nicolson and maturation expert Dr. Jim Swan, who together fused centuries-old Scottish traditions with Canada’s Pacific Coast ingredients and climate, earning a devoted following among connoisseurs and curious travellers alike.

Thanks to a maritime climate that mirrors Scotland’s whisky-making environments, Victoria proved to be an ideal home base. The region’s clean island water, fresh, coastal air, and temperate oceanic climate all contribute to the spirits’ distinct flavour and character. Using Canadian barley and copper pot stills from Scotland’s renowned Forsyth’s distillery, they got to work building a facility that would produce legitimately authentic single malt whisky with a uniquely Canadian identity.

Award-Winning Canadian single malt whisky

In the grand scheme of the whisky world, Macaloney’s is a young pup. But nobody can deny that the distillery’s national and international success has been swift and impressive, proving that Scottish technique and Canadian ingredients were paying off.

Among Macaloney’s standouts internationally are the double gold-winning An Aba, a lighted peated sherried whisky, An Loy, a double-distilled, single malt whisky, and triple-distilled Kildara, which won World’s Best Pot Still Whisky in 2023. Macaloney’s Sherry Bomb Whisky, Cath-Nah-Aven, won gold in 2023’s edition of the World Whiskies Awards. Nationally, its St Mallie Portugues Red Wine Single Cask, Peat Project Red Wine Cask Whisky, and Peat Project Bourbon Cask Whisky took home Best Canadian Single Cask and Single Malt in 2020, 2022, and 2025, respectively. Its Killeigh Triple Distilled Whisky won Best Canadian Pot Still in 2022, while its Kirkinriola Portuguese Red Wine Single Cask won the same award in 2024. Its Peated Kildara, Triple Distilled Lightly Peated Whisky took home top prize in the same category in 2025.

Finally, Macaloney’s Peat Project Moscatel Cask Whisky was awarded 2025’s Canadian Whisky of the Year. Made with local BC barley, lightly smoked with peat, and aged in a Portuguese Moscatel cask, it offers notes of coastal pine, juicy pineapple, and chocolate-orange. On a wider scale, this win was integral as it competed against nearly 200 others in blind tastings, proving that Canadian single malts could rival even the most established and respected names in the world.

Why Macaloney’s whisky has captured global attention

Let’s not overlook the fact that whisky tourism has exploded, and discerning visitors are eager to include a spirit tour on their itinerary. Fundamentally, the success of Macaloney’s can be traced to a deliberate combination of authenticity, craftsmanship, and a deep sense of place. Vancouver Island’s natural environment, when combined with Canadian barley, fresh water, and a cool ocean breeze, results in a series of character-rich spirits. Furthermore, its reliance on copper potstill distillation, long fermentation periods and careful cask selection is reminiscent of Scotland’s storied whisky houses.

The future of Macaloney’s Island Distillery & Canadian whisky

Along with an expansive three-season patio in the works, Macaloney’s also plans to add more tours. tasting programs and collaborative events in the coming years to accommodate a growing demand. Along with tasting as many spirits as you like, Macaloney’s signature experiences will include a Grain-to-Glass tour, taking guests behind the scenes – from the grist mill and warehouse, to the pot stills and the maturation room – with the option to even smoke peat upon request.

For decades, the conversation about single malt whisky centred mainly on Scotland. Macaloney’s is proof that new regions, including Vancouver Island, can create exceptional whisky. And while Macaloney’s has racked up a list of impressive awards, it’s important to keep in mind that thousands of whisky barrels are still maturing, each representing future, potentially award-winning releases, further elevating the brand’s reputation. Currently, Macaloney’s is the 3rd most-awarded distillery in the world and the most-awarded craft distillery in Canada. Conclusion: Graeme and his team are just getting started!

Sidebar – don’t skip the beer!

Named after a poem by Robbie Burns, Twa Dogs Brewery operates inside Macaloney’s, pouring a rotating lineup of craft brews brewed on site using high-quality ingredients. Behind-the-scenes tours offer guests a chance to sample various strains of malted and unmalted barley while enjoying a few beer and whisky tastings along the way. Macaloney’s brewery arm adds another dimension to the visitor experience, all in a relaxed, speakeasy-style setting that feels upscale yet welcoming, without the pretentious atmosphere or hefty price tag. Be it a pint or a dram, Macaloney’s delivers a memorable experience, with a touch of West Coast swagger.

Start in The Markt, the city’s historic heart, and visit Leipzig’s Renaissance-style Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall), now home to the Museum of City History. Head to Mendelssohn House for a glimpse into the composer Felix Mendelssohn’s life and works, and the Bach Museum in St. Thomas Square, which features 12 exhibition rooms dedicated to the other famous German composer. Across from the museum, St. Thomas Church is a Romanesque-Gothic gem dating back to the 13th century. Bach, who served as Cantor of St. Thomas School, is also buried there, directly in front of the altar.
Eat

You can’t come to Leipzig and miss Auerbachs Keller, located below the Mädler Passage. A wine bar hotspot since the 16th-century, this visually stunning 500-year-old restaurant gained international fame through Goethe’s play Faust, where Mephistopheles brings Faust during his travels. Visitors are encouraged to explore the restaurant’s historic dining rooms and enjoy classic Saxon fare.

Leipzig’s eight Michelin restaurants cater to those eager to savour the city’s fine dining scene. Of the eight, three have earned a one Michelin star. Kuultivo prides itself on an ever-evolving, locally-inspired menu paired with dynamic wines, while Frieda’s eclectic dishes, such as ‘saddle’ of venison, salted celeriac, artichoke cream, pistachio, and lardo, have made a lasting impression. Petra and Detlef Schlegel’s Stadtpfeiffer has been an elegant, French-inspired mainstay since 2001.

As for imbibing, visit Gosenschenke, home to one of Saxony’s most beautiful beer gardens, and enjoy a glass of sour Leipziger Gose beer. So popular and beloved, the city is also known as “Gosestadt,” and plays host to the annual Gose Day on November 17th. Try the Magic Monkey and Pornstar Milk-Tinii at Imperii. Not only does this bar serve creative cocktails, it does so in Leipzig’s oldest trading house, drawing inspiration from the city’s history as a crossroads of commerce and trading powerhouse.

It may come as a surprise, but Leipzig’s passionate coffee culture goes back centuries. After all, it’s said that Bach himself frequently visited Cafe Zimmermann – the city’s largest coffee house in the 18th century – even using it as the backdrop for his cantatas, including his Coffee Cantata. Today, Kaffeehaus Riquet is easily one of the most coveted and recognisable addresses for a relaxing cup of coffee. Combining Art Nouveau with Chinese architecture, this former commercial building has two copper-embossed elephant heads gracing its entrance, a Riquet company trademark. Enjoy a Leipziger Lerche (shortcrust pastry filled with an almond-nut mix and marzipan) with a Pharisäer, a hot coffee with rum, topped with whipped cream.

Escape

Day trips and weekend getaways in Saxony are well worth the detour. Two hours south of Leipzig, the small, charming city of Plauen blends historic architecture with artisanal workshops. Renowned for its iconic “Plauen Lace,” visitors are encouraged to visit the exhibit-rich Embroidery Machine Museum to gain a better appreciation of the methodical machines and time-honoured techniques used to shape the Vogtland Region’s proud and enduring threadwork tradition.

Further south in Markneukirchen, the city’s Musikinstrumenten Museum celebrates its centuries-old instrument-making legacy. Immersive, guided tours take visitors through more than 20 rooms, all boasting a jaw-dropping collection of musical instruments from Germany and around the world. Nearby, the Historisches Sägewerk is a historic, reconstructed sawmill that brings the region’s ancestral craft to life, with live demonstrations that show how ordinary tree trunks are transformed into beautifully intricate, character-rich instruments.

Minutes from the Czech border, the town of Bad Elster has been an esteemed spa town for centuries. In fact, its therapeutic, mineral-rich waters from the spring now known as the Moritzquelle were documented as early as the 17th century. Today, the Royal Saxon State Spa, aka, Sächsische Staatsbäder GmbH Soletherme & Saunawelt Bad Elster, offers several treatments and an array of wellness amenities, including their famous moor mud and peat therapy – baths that promote zen in its purest, most natural form.

Favourite haunts

Start your Athenian adventure with this pro tip: before you head to the metro or hop in a cab, the best way to assimilate yourself quickly into Greek life, is to stop at one of the airport cafes for a Freddo Cappuccino. Cold and sweet, it’s a perfectly refreshing drink after a long flight.

Whether visiting for the first time, or 10th, Syntagma Square is always my first point of interest. A massive, centrally located square, it allows me to get my bearings. Above ground, in front of the Hellenic Parliament building, is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Every top of the hour, Evzones – elite presidential guards – perform the changing of the guard, a carefully choreographed, timeless ceremony. Below ground, at the Syntagma metro station, I always stop by the one the city’s most unexpected museums, revealing ancient roads, pottery, even skeletal remains, traced from classical antiquity to the Ottoman period.

Plaka – the “Neighbourhood of the Gods” – is one of the city’s most enchanting areas, and one I spend the most time in. Located at the base of the Acropolis, its narrow streets, tiny squares, and hidden courtyards are filled with everything from cafes to Byzantine churches. Near Monastiraki Square, I fuel up with a traditional Greek coffee at H Oraia Ellas (Beautiful Greece), and grab a gyro down the street at Bairaktaris – both are among the oldest establishments in the city, dating back to the 19th century.

Fueled by caffeine and tzatziki, I make my way through the expansive National Garden to Lycabettus Hill. Athens’ highest hill rewards with outstanding panoramic views of the city.

Pro tip: take the funicular up the mountain, and walk back down at dusk, stopping at Prasini Tenta (Green Tent) to enjoy a coffee or cocktail overlooking the city at sunset.

Anafiotika is a tiny, hidden enclave that clings to the northern slopes of the Acropolis. Designed to look and feel like a Cycladic island village, its narrow, winding lanes, whitewashed cubic houses draped with bougainvillea, and outstanding city views make it a peaceful respite from the crowds.

I venture to Aeropagus Hill, once home to an ancient Greek court of law, before climbing the storied steps to the Parthenon itself. Sacred ground, I shed an emotional, uncontrollable tear every time I gaze upon it. Along Dionysiou Aeropagitou street, I pass the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and Prison of Socrates, en route to Philopappos Hill, a relaxing walk through nature with postcard views of the distant Acropolis.

Pro tip: Visit during golden hour to witness cotton candy hues gracing the ancient landmark. I end the day with a delectable dinner and live music at Geros tou Moria restaurant along the iconic Mnisikleous Stairs before cocktailing at Brettos, Athens’ oldest bar.

Can’t miss neighbourhoods

As tempting as it is to stay in areas like Plaka, venturing into more local neighbourhoods gives you a more immersive glimpse into Athens’ authentic heartbeat.

Psyri, tucked between Omonia and Monastiraki, was once a craftsmen’s quarter. Today, it’s like a teenager – relatively quiet during the day, but unapologetically loud and alive from dusk to sun up. I love meandering the maze of street art, even dancing in the streets until the wee hours, thanks to competing Bouzouki bands vying for your attention at every café, tavern, and restaurant. Must hit spots include Krinos for chocolate-drenched honey balls, Mokka Café for an authentic Greek coffee made on sand, and Avli, a hole-in-the-wall nook that you’d otherwise miss, if it wasn’t for the long line of diners waiting to be seated.

South of the city proper, Vouliagmeni is at the heart of the Athenian Riviera. Hike Faskomilia Hill for lovely coastal vistas, enjoy a day on the beach, and reward yourself at Lake Vougliagmeni, a tranquil, thermal spa surrounded by incredible natural beauty. In Greece, you can’t go five minutes without seeing a restaurant within walking distance, and in Vouliagmeni, I always get a table at Zaxos Grill for street food, Waffle House for hand-made ice cream, and Panorama restaurant for delicious seafood, oceanside.

West of Athens, Piraeus is a storied port city, and a gateway to the Greek islands. While many visitors pass through, I often stay a while and enjoy a coffee with Bougatsa (Greek phyllo custard pastry) in Mikrolimano (Little Harbour), watching fishing boats traverse the bay, before dipping into Votsalakia Beach (yes, especially in November and December) before gingerly strolling palm-tree lined Costantinos Triandafyllos Passage, and dinner at any of the restaurants lining beautiful Marina Zeas.

Where to stay: La Divina

Located in the historic Thiseio neighbourhood – between Plaka, Psyri, the Acropolis and Ancient Agora – La Divina makes for an obvious home base. 12 meticulously designed rooms, each named after the operas performed by legendary Greek-American Soprano Maria Callas. Charming, calming, and central, complete with personalised service and refined flavour, it makes for a comforting stay after an adrenaline-fueled Athenian adventure, with Parthenon views to boot.

Best time to visit Athens

Having been to Athens throughout the year, I prefer to visit before and after peak season – April to May, and October to December (yes, even December). It’s less expensive, the crowds are slightly thinner, and the attractions are still open. Athena herself replaces summer heat with pleasant days and comfortable nights, seducing with an ever-present, lively vibe that permeates into every crevice of this great city.

My phone pinged while eating roadside poutine just outside of Ottawa. It was an invitation. It read: “Wolfville, Nova Scotia – Devour! Food & Film Fest – late October – you interested?” I put down my fork, and hit ‘accept’. After all, what better way to experience this lovely corner of Canada than by attending the world’s largest food film fest!

Devour! A festival born from vision

In the early 2010s, iconic Nova Scotia chef Michael Howell and film industry veteran Lia Rinaldo, known for her leadership at the Atlantic Film Festival, shared a fundamental belief: food was more than just a matter of sustenance, and film was more than simple entertainment. With that, a seed was planted, and it was at this moment when Howell and Rinaldo embarked on a quest to create an experimental festival.

The inaugural fest was small yet charming – indicative of Wolfville itself. But Howell and Rinaldo’s respected ranks in their respective arenas played a big role when it came to impact. Chef-led dinners, hands-on workshops, community gatherings, and culinary-inspired movie screenings injected immediate excitement, and word spread quickly about the festival’s authentic, wholesome flair. As time passed, many prolific names attended, including Sam Kass (former White House chef for the Obamas), and even Anthony Bourdain.

2025 marked the 15th anniversary of Devour! Guests come from far and wide not only to immerse themselves with feature films and flavours, but celebrate taste and storytelling in a community already known for its welcoming nature, and agricultural ethos.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1200" height="800" src="https://i0.wp.com/pathstotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/2024-10-24-Devour-Chefs-Shorts-Gala-Dinner-MDoucette-059-2.jpg?resize=1200%2C800&ssl=1" alt="Inside Nova Scotia’s Devour!
Why Wolfville & Devour! go hand-in-hand

Nova Scotia is already famous for its delicious experiences, including the Lobster Trail, Chowder Trail, Cheese Trail, and Good Cheer Trail. Beer and cider are big here, as is wine. The province’s viticultural roots date back to the early 17th century, and today boasts varietals including Baco Noir and L’Acadie Blanc. Besides being home to the nearby Grand-Pre UNESCO World Heritage Site, Wolfville is considered to be the province’s agricultural heartland with everything from roadside farmer’s markets to coastal culinary experiences and wine tours – all featuring local flavours.

When it comes to the big screen, Denton Hall on the Acadia University campus is home to galas and special events, while the Al Whittle Theatre, opened in 1911, is the hub for most of the 47 screenings that were shown in 2025. Its historic charm, and community initiatives to resurrect it complements the festival’s theme perfectly. Since reopening in 2004, it’s become Wolfville’s cultural hub and is very much woven into the heart of the town’s historic, and independent cinematic soul. Like Devour!, the theatre is a celebratory symbol of heritage, culture and place.

Michelin-starred experiences

The 15th edition of Devour! treated guests to both local culinary connoisseurs and Michelin-starred chefs from Montreal. Le Caveau restaurant played host to a curated three-course luncheon inspired by Bistro La Franquette’s Renee Deschene-O’Hagan and chef Elias Deligianis, while at Lightfoot Vineyards, acclaimed chefs Emma Cardarelli and Chris Pyne showcased seasonal, autumnal ingredients resulting in exquisite flavours. Workshops from Danny Smiles (Le Violon), Massimo Piedimonte (Cabaret l’Enfer), and sommelier Ryan Gray (Nora Gray, Elena, Gia Vin & Grill) were immersive, engaging, and informative.

Chef Jean-Sebastien Giguere (La Cabane du Coureur) added a touch of home-grown sweetness to brunch thanks to his maple-infused delights. In the afternoon, Eastern Canada’s most talented chefs competed for most innovative poutine, while at the Wolfville Farmer’s Market, a lobster-themed ‘Fais-to-do’ blended street market energy with culinary celebration and communal dining fun. Every event, talk, and workshop reflected the festival’s aim of combining local flavours, tips and tricks, and storytelling with a personal touch.

Devour! global stature & Enduring legacy

What started in Wolfville has expanded globally. In 2019 alone, there were 19 satellite events, including throughout Canada, the USA, Germany, and Portugal. An increasingly popular spinoff takes place in the Bahamas. In February 2026, Green Turtle Cay will host the 6th Annual Devour! The Beach, a tropical winter getaway that combines food and film with uniquely local experiences. No matter the location, each Devour! has one goal in mind: to celebrate the collective human experience, to go deeper with the aim of inspiring compassion with emotional, impactful storytelling through food and film.

Devour! favourites

As a fan of food, film and the combination thereof, Devour! was divine! If the goal was to experience, savour and appreciate the finer, more detailed nuances of what it takes to create a masterpiece on a plate or on film, Devour! left me salivating and satiated. Sure, the dishes were delicious, the films moving, but I found myself impacted most when young directors excitedly shared spontaneous, unrehearsed exuberance about their latest film project, and when seasoned pros gathered young students together, and instructed them on how to best crack a lobster for diners unfamiliar with how to eat them (thank you).

What struck the biggest chord was the 10th annual Great Devour! Community Cajun Chicken Supper, supporting regional food banks in the Annapolis Valley. “We’ll serve thousands of free meals to those who need it the most today,” chef Michael tells me. “It’s not only about inviting chefs and screening films, it’s about giving back to this community – healthy meals to food-insecure residents while promoting health and agriculture”.
