An eSIM, or ‘embedded subscriber identity module’, is a mobile plan downloaded to an iPhone, tablet, or smartwatch. eSIMs allow devices to connect to mobile networks, eliminating the need for a physical card. They also allow instant activation, cannot be lost or stolen, and help you avoid extra roaming fees.
Travellers now have a choice of many eSIM providers (e.g., Ohayu, Airalo, Mede, GigSky), with varying pricing, mixed-size data packages, and network reliability. I tested the Ohayu eSIM while travelling in New York. This review is based on three days of frequent use.

Ohayu Pros
- Simple installation: Purchase, installation, and activation are through the app, which also triggers the phone’s eSIM installer. Ohayu provides step‑by‑step on‑screen installation guidance in the app and through its online help centre, to turn on the line and establish the network connection.
- Competitive cost: It’s hard to compare plans because providers offer packages with a mix of durations and sizes. However, for multi‑country trips (Europe, Asia, global), Ohayu’s pricing sometimes beats other eSIMs for the same region. For example, Ohayu’s 3 GB plan for 14 days in the U.S. costs $9.49 USD or $3.16 per GB. Whereas Airalo’s 15-day U.S. plan with 5 GB costs $13.87 USD or $4.62 per GB. In terms of global plans, the Ohayu 2 GB monthly plan costs $9.99 USD per month, while the Airalo 30-day, 3 GB plan costs $24.46 USD.
Note: These prices were pulled in February 2026; check both websites for more accurate rates.
- Easy data usage and monitoring: Through the app, the user can manually monitor data usage and top up their plan when needed. Once active, the app shows the data balance, expiry date, connection status, and local mobile network. Ohayu does not offer unlimited plans because other plans with unlimited data tend to limit speed after a certain threshold to minimise costs. Global plans allow data rollover, which is a real plus.
- Good customer support: Customer support responds quickly and is dedicated to solving user issues, no matter how long it takes.
Ohayu Cons
No process for duplicate plans: There is no mechanism to stop users (like me) from loading a plan more than once, even before activation. The app does not allow the deletion of a duplicate plan if loaded in error, which can result in extra charges for the customer.
Promo code entry confusing: A promo code can be applied during checkout. However, the spot for the code can easily be missed. It appears on the final payment screen as a small text link and doesn’t look like a typical “Enter code” box. You have to tap the link to open the input box (image below).
Fewer plans: Ohayu offers less flexibility for travellers, compared to other providers, with fewer micro-plans (1-2 GB), country plans, long-duration options, and niche regional bundles.
