  • As we set on the beach drinking Spumante waiting for a show we knew nothing about to begin a little girl stepped into the send next to me. She looked around in excitement, took her shoes off and begun to twirl repeating two words: “che bella”.

I wandered into Atrani on foot at sunset & the only thing going through my head at this point, watching this little girl twerk & stumble in the warm sand, was “yes, I agree”.

  • One of the lesser known historic attractions of Naples is Complesso Monumentale di Santa Chiara.

It is a convent & a church set in the centre of Naples behind rather boring but walls.

The walls of the cloister are covered w/ seventeenth-century frescoes depicting saints, allegories & scenes from the Old Testament.

Inside are the remnants of Roman baths & an impressive library, among other museum displays.

  • Did you know that Zinfandel originates in Croatia?

Split didn’t give us an impression of a place that promotes wine tourism. But Croatia is a great wine region, so naturally, we looked for wineries (and opted in for local wines when dining). Winery Bedalov appeared on a few lists & was also a short 20min or so drive from the Split Old Town.

This family-owned gem is located right on the waterfront of Kaštela w/ vineyards above in the hills & on the nearby islands.

They grow 7 grape varietals, only one of which is white (Maraština). The soil & hot climate here seem to work best for rich red grapes.

Kaštela is home to a couple interesting red grape varietals: Dobricic, which can only be found here, and Crljenak – which you better know, as Zinfandel.

A few years ago California were determined to claim Zinfandel as their own but in that research it was uncovered that Kaštela in fact holds the right to this luscious grape. I am sure California was a tiny bit humbled 😅

A tasting experience at Winery Bedalov is one I hope you can have as well. Sitting on their breezy terrace, looking out at the Adriatic Sea you get to taste a selection of their wines (or all) paired w/ home made, local snacks. Each one comes with a story & a varietal insight.

Dobricic (cover image), for example, is a thick skinned dark grape which results in nearly black wine. Which is what they call it — black wine. You might think it would be heavy on the palette, but it is not. It is rich & bright, w/ soft tannins & dark fruit notes.

When we took an Uber out to Winery Bedalov we originally planned to explore the village, perhaps enjoy the beach. But instead we spent hours on this terrace, drinking wine & exchanging stories of the past.

Split has some fantastic food spots across town. Even in the most touristy corners you can find fine dinning gems.

This is Konoba Laganini, here you will find Dalmatian cuisine in the heart of the Old City.

The smoked fish pictured is perfectly translucent, seasoned w/ black olive powder. It was one of the most unique takes on fish I tasted in a while.
